RUTH DETER

A Memorial Service will be held for Ruth Irene Deter, 90 of Chico, on Friday, April 15, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the home of her nephew, Dick Jones, in Durham. Ruth passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Enloe Hospital.

She was born February 10, 1921 to F.W. and Irene Robinson in Colton, CA. She attended schools in San Bernardino until 1939, when she moved to Chico to attend Chico State. Ruth graduated from Chico State in 1943 with BA degrees in Home Economics and Art and also received a teaching credential. During her senior year she met "Mike" Hunt, a pilot instructor at Chico Air Base. Her plans to become a teacher at Chico High School were quickly changed. They were married in April of 1943. Mike and Ruth lived at many Air Force Bases during the time that their sons, David and Jeffery were born. In 1950, they were transferred to Japan. Mike was killed in a plane crash in the Philippines in December 1950.

Ruth returned to Chico to live with her sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Warren Jones. She took a teaching position in Courtland, CA, where she met Don Deter, a native of Chico and descendant of the Patrick and Compton pioneer families. On April 15, 1954, they were married in Reno, NV. They moved back to Chico, where they owned and operated the Tiny Tots Shop on Broadway for ten years. After the sale of the store Ruth joined Don in his construction business, Detco Steel.

Ruth was very active in the community. She was past president of Soroptomist, Butte Creek Country Club and Omega Nu. Her hobbies included golf, bridge, reading, gardening, and she was a superb cook.

Her survivors include her husband, Don Deter of Chico; two sons, David (Arlene) Deter of La Canada and Jeffrey (Cindy) Deter of Palos Verdes Estates; two grandchildren, Julie Deter of Santa Barbara and Devon Deter of Venice, CA.
