Ruth Sanford-Beaumont Obituary
RUTH SANFORD BEAUMONT August 22. 1920- August 19, 2013 A memorial service is planned for Sunday for beloved mother, concerned citizen, and long time Chico resident, Ruth Sanford Beaumont, who passed away peacefully in her sleep after a short illness on August 19, just 3 days shy of her 93rd birthday. Ruth was born on August 22, 1920 to Mabel May Bradshaw and Bela B. Sanford in Brooklyn, New York. The youngest of three children, Ruth lived in Brooklyn until she attended college at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1944. After graduation, Ruth married her husband of 35 years, the late M. William Beaumont. William and Ruth decided to move to Chico in 1948 because, as Ruth said, "we felt it was an ideal place to raise our children". It was those years of raising her children that Ruth cherished most deeply. An active parent as well as an active citizen, Ruth's heart and wisdom manifested in her commitment to provide meaningful experiences to her children on the spiritual, educational, and emotional levels while at the same time attending to needs of her community. When Ruth became a grandparent in 1999, her heart overflowed and her active presence as a grandmother benefited her granddaughter greatly. A member of The First Congregational Church of Chico and Trinity Methodist Church, Ruth participated actively in music and service ministries, such as tone-chimes, choir, and teaching Sunday school. Ruth's faith led her to live consciously in word and deed, remaining aware of the needs of others on the local and global levels. Within Chico, Ruth served on the PTA and Women's League of Voters. In addition, Ruth was a lifetime member Beta Sigma Phi, and helped found Community Concerts. Ruth also shared her resources with charities world-wide, a favorite being Heifer International. In her spare time, Ruth enjoyed writing poetry, reading literature, keeping up on current events, traveling, collecting lighthouses as symbols of hope, and making her legendary homemade grape juice, pickles, and unique desserts. Ruth remained active throughout her senior years, and held very dear to her heart the close friendships she developed in her Walking Group, "Monday Group", and while helping with the newsletter at church. Ruth was graced with a sharp intellect and strong spirit, which allowed her to compose a gratitude list on the last day of her life. Ruth is survived by her children James Beaumont of New York, New York; Christopher and Kimberly Beaumont and grand-daughter, Mariah Beaumont, of Boulder Creek, CA; and Jacqueline (Gigi) and Timothy Byrne, of Maui, Hawaii. Ruth is preceded in death by her sister, Mary Jean Sanford of San Jose, CA. and her brother, the Reverend Robert Sanford of Fairfield, CA. A memorial service for Ruth is planned for Sunday, August 25, 12:30pm , with a musical prelude starting at 12:15pm, at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 285 5th Street, Chico. Reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of gifts, donations may be made in Ruth's honor to Heifer International, through Trinity United Methodist Church, 530-343-1498.
