1914 - 2012 Obituary Condolences


Sarah Weigel, 97, died peacefully in her sleep with her family by her side, at Oroville Hospital on February 10, 2012 after a short illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Braxton Hansell and Marie Teresa Wieland Hansell; her sister, Marian; her brother, Jack; her husband of 26 years, Claude Peregoy, who died in 1967. Her second husband, Frank "Papa" Weigel, who she met in a bible study group, died in 1998. They were married 14 years.

Survivors include her brother, Bill Hansell, and her three sons, Bill, Dan, and Jim Peregoy, their spouses, numerous grandchildren and great- grandchildren. There are also many extended family and friends that were dear to her.

Sarah J. Hansell was born in Oroville Hospital on August 8, 1914. Her parents brought her home to a tent cabin at Las Plumas, which is now under Lake Oroville. Her early life was full of exploring the rivers and hills around Las Plumas and hunting and trapping.

She moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to train and became a nurse. She lived in Lafayette, where she worked and raised her three sons. Sarah returned to Oroville in 1979 and became a very active member of the community.

Sarah helped create and lead the Butte County Hospice volunteer program. She was an avid traveler and exercised regularly. She won a half marathon at the Bidwell Classic and snow skied until she was 80.

She had a strong faith and was involved in St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. At one time she was the oldest altar server. She was active in politics, promoting the causes of social justice and peace. She participated in several peace marches.

Some of her interests included art, writing, Butte County history, cultural events, square dancing, ornithology, hiking, camping, 49er football, etc. She was taking a creative writing class at Butte College when she passed away.

She truly loved her family and friends; lived her life on her own terms and was an inspiration to everyone she met. Sarah was well loved by all those who knew her and will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Sarah's Life will be held Saturday, February 25, 2012, at 11 o'clock in the morning, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Oroville. She will be laid to rest next to her husband, Frank Weigel in the Oroville Memorial Cemetery in Oroville, CA at a later date.

Gifts in her memory may be sent to the Sarah Weigel Memorial Fund, which will benefit the Extended Care Unit of the Oroville Hospital, who treated her with love and respect in her final days.
