WILLIAM C. "BILL" MCCONNELL

A private family gathering will be held at a later date for fomer Chico resident William C. "Bill" McConnell, 91 who passed away suddenly on October 6, 2011, in Medford, Ore.

Bill was born in Ballyclare (near Belfast), N. Ireland, to William and Rachel McConnell on December 22, 1919. Bill and his family migrated to the United States when he was three, coming through Ellis Island, and continuing by train to the San Francisco Bay area. Bill grew up in the San Mateo, CA area and began working for Trans World Airlines when he was 20 years old. After a break to serve in the Navy during World War II, he retired after 40 years with TWA.

Bill met Phyllis Hittinger on the golf course just before entering the Navy and after their marriage on May 27, 1944, they continued to enjoy playing golf together for many years.

Bill and his wife retired to Chico from San Carlos, Calif. in 1981. They enjoyed their home in Butte Creek Canyon and took long trips in their 5th wheel trailer, looking to land that perfect fish.

In 2006, after the death of his wife, Bill moved to a wonderful retirement community in Medford, Ore. to be close to his older brother, Andy. Bill could repair anything and during his time in Medford he enjoyed a new hobby of repairing antique clocks for all his friends.

Bill is survived by two daughters, Joan Voss and Nancy Johnson (Ray), five grandchildren, and one very special great-granddaughter.
