Mary Bradley McComb Cousino

CHILLICOTHE: Mary Bradley McComb Cousino peacefully joined her Savior and God, on March 9, 2013, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Jasper, Georgia to Jane Keeter Bradley and Homer Bradley in 1920. She graduated from the University of Georgia and went to work in Washington D. C. at the U.S. Patent Office and the F.B.I. before marrying U. S. Naval Officer Henry McComb in 1944. They moved to Chillicothe in 1953 and enjoyed 33 years together before Henry died in 1977.

They had two children, Camille and John. In addition to raising her children, Mary taught Home Economics for Chillicothe City Schools, and was the driving force behind the curriculum that extended the opportunity for home economics education to male students, and subsequently industrial arts education to female students. Many of her students fondly remember her mandatory grocery store shopping field trips to Big Bear. Following her retirement she went on to work as a real estate agent for Henry Barlow for many years. In 1981 she married Hugh Cousino, and together with her aunt, Minnie Sparks, she set out on travel adventures that took them from Alaska to Australia with many stops in between.

She loved nature especially gardening, animals, and bird watching, and was an accomplished seamstress and fabulous cook. She was involved in many community groups including the American Association of University Women, The Chillicothe Garden Club, PEO, and The Clothing Bank. She was a committed follower of God, and a long-time and faithful member of The First Presbyterian Church. Tender for the misfortunes of others, she was known to say that she would not pray for anything she was not willing to help out with herself: and she did both. She was a faithful contributor and supporter to many Christian mission and charity organizations. We rejoice in knowing that she is now in heaven and able to finally see the eternal impact of her life here on earth.

She is preceded in death by both of her husbands; her brother, Homer Bradley II; and a special grandson, Nicholas McComb.

She leaves behind her children, Camille Smith (David) of Chillicothe, Dr. John McComb (Geri) of Greensboro, North Carolina; her grandchildren, Lisa Finn (J.J.) of Powell, Ohio, Michael Smith (Stephanie) of Fall River, Massachusetts, Andrew Smith (Becky) of Powell, Ohio, Dr. Daniel Smith (Katie) of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Jessie McComb of Charlotte, North Carolina; great-grandchildren, Christopher Smith, Jasmine Smith, Joshua Smith, William Benevides, Ariel Benevides, Jonathan Finn, Elizabeth Finn, Caleb Smith, and Levi Smith; and one great-great-grandson, Kayden Smith. She will be deeply missed.

Mary had both a lively and determined spirit and, her family is deeply appreciative to her caregivers who helped her to maintain that by allowing her to live independently.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial service to celebrate her life at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 12th at the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor James W. Grove officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery. Calling hours will be held at the church one hour prior to the service Tuesday. Arrangements are under the direction of the WARE FUNERAL HOME.

In lieu of flowers, and in the spirit of her benevolence to others, the family asks that contributions to The Hope Clinic, P.O. Box 864, Chillicothe, Ohio 45601, be made in her honor.
