Herbert Garrioch Obituary
Herbert Reginald Garrioch, age 87 years of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 6, 2005, with his family at his side. 'He was born on June 21, 1918 in Kinosota, Manitoba. Herbert met Margaret (nee Bruce) in 1946, and they were married in 1948. Together they raised six children: two sons: Everett (Johanna), Reg (Shelley); four daughters: Rose (Gilles) Duquette, Gloria (Louis) Bourque, Fay (Barry) Pettypiece and Tracy; numerous grandchildren: Kerri (Hugh) LaForrest, Stacey (Devin) Pickles, Corey (Christina) Shearing, Amie (Carlos) Walcott, Lindsay, Jessica, Travis, Tyler, Heather, Kevin (Kristy) Greg; great grandchildren: Elijah, Hannah, Colby, Nathan, Ally, Autumn and Kole. Herb was the last of his family to pass away and was predeceased by his parents and all seven of his siblings. 'Herb was enlisted in the #10 District Royal Canadian Army Service Corps # 5th day of November, 1941. He served in Canada/United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He was discharged from the service under Routine Order 28th of March, 1946. 'In 1948, Herb worked farmland in Westbourne, Manitoba. Later, in 1952 he moved to Atikokan, Ont. to work at Mando in the pulp and paper industry, 1956 he worked for Land & Forestry at French Lake, Ont; 1958 he began mining at CAC Caland Ore Mines and later that year Steep Rock Iron Ore Mines in Atikokan, Ont. until the mine closed in 1979. 'At the age of 61, Herb attended Confederation College Carpentry Course for one year and worked at the Fix It Club in Atikokan. In 1982 Herb and Marg traveled to B.C. and lived in Powell River and Williams Lake to be with their families and enjoy beautiful B.C. In 1984, they relocated to Thunder Bay where they decided to make this their retirement home. 'Herb was a very loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a quiet gracious man but had the best quick wit and endless sense of humour. He loved all the simple, beautiful things in life and lived his life exactly that way. He was a pillar of strength for his family and taught his kids the golden rule. He attended all the children and grandchildren's school activities as much as he was able to. He also was an active man up until he was 84 and belonged to EZYDUZIT Curling at the Thunder Bay Country Club, and one of Thunder Bay's Horseshoe Club. He loved the outdoors and did lots of hunting, fishing and camping in the Atikokan Area. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legions in the cities he lived. 'Funeral Services for the late Herbert Garrioch will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 9th, 2005, in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Rev. Ed Swayze of St. Stephen's the Martyr Anglican Church. Visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the time of Service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Herb's memory to St. Joseph's Hospital-Pallative Care, Thunder Bay Regional Foundation/Renal Clinic, Thunder Bay Humane Society or to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #5 - Building Fund. 'Dad: We know you're resting in peace now, we all love you very much and will miss you with all our hearts. Sleep now, you have definitely deserved it.
