MATTI ALANEN Obituary

MATTI ALANEN November 24, 1950 - November 20, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Matti Alanen, who peacefully departed this world on November 20, 2025, at his home suddenly 4 days before his 75th birthday. Matti left behind a legacy of kindness, wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to those he cherished.

Born on November 24, 1950, in Jurvu, Finland. Matti was the son of the late Toivo and Terttu Alanen. The family moved to Port Arthur, Ontario in November 1957 to start a new life.

Matti first started working at Bay and Algoma pumping gas as a teenager and then moved onto the Great Lakes in the late 70s as an operator in the Graham area. He went back to Bay and Algoma where he received his mechanics papers in the 80s. He dedicated his career to heavy equipment mechanics for over 35 years to which he received many other achievements and accomplishments. After retirement, his passion was working at the Real Canadian Superstore and left a lasting impact on his co-workers. Matti took great pride of his work which is a testament to his dedication and excellence in everything.

In his spare time, Matti enjoyed spending time at camp, a passion he shared with his family. The bonfires at Graham were often the setting for family gatherings and joyous celebrations. Matti also had a love for fishing, splitting wood, riding dirt bike/quad, picking berries, and watching his son mud race. In his younger years he also enjoyed waterskiing and playing goalie every Saturday in the bush camp league.

Matti is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Maureen; his son Michael; two granddaughters Taylor and Mikayla; and brother-in-law Duce. A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Matti was the cornerstone of his family, always offering support, love, and guidance.

Matti was predeceased by his son, Mark who passed away at age 10 to leukemia; his sister Marja and in-laws George and Lillian McGuire.

The family would like to thank the EMT, police, fire department and many others for their care during this time.

A Celebration of Matti's Life will be held on December 4, at Oliver Road Community Centre (main floor), 563 Oliver Rd. from 1:00 pm. to 4:00 pm. Friends and family are invited to attend where memories of Matti's life and legacy will be shared.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to the Charity of Your Choice.

Condolences to all of Matti's family , I knew him when we were much younger and living on crown street he was a great friend to a lost teenager going to school in the "big city" hopefully I was some company to him at that time as well as he lived mostly alone as his mom was out in camp as a cook I believe . Happy trails Matti!

Maureen and Michael.. im so very sorry for your loss. I have so many great memories of camping in Graham and then working with Matti at camp 603. He was always a great friend to me and always there to help whether it was my stuck snow machine or vehicle advice. It was always a joy to run into him in the community over the years and catch up.. we could talk for hours if life wasn't so busy. My heart goes out to you during this difficult time. He was truly an amazing man
