Alice Siddall Obituary

(Landgraff)
March 8th, 1924 - March 7th, 2016

It is with a sad heart, that we announce the passing of our mother, step-mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend.

Mom passed quietly at Bethammi Nursing Home, one-day shy of her 92nd birthday, with loved ones at her side. We had hoped to celebrate with her, but, she had other plans! She wanted to start a new journey with the loves that had passed before her.

Mom was born in Rossburn, Manitoba to Ukrainian immigrant parents, who were proud to call Canada their home. She was the daughter of John Kostantinowich (Kostantin) and Natalka (Nellie) Roginski. The family, at that time, John, Nellie, Mike, and Mom, moved to Fort William (Westfort - Frederica St.) in 1924. Stella and Walter where born here.

Mom always worked, she was proud to be a “Rosie” at Canadian Car and Foundry during the War years, helping to build the Curtiss-Wright SB2C Helldivers. After moving to Port Arthur (Banning St.) she worked at the Port Arthur Shipbuilding Company and as a nanny to the Black family.

She married our father, Robert Landgraff, in 1945. They were blessed with three children, Betty, Brian, and Brenda. Our dad passed in 1962, at which time Mom worked and raised us on her own. She was employed by Eaton's, Canadian Tire, Doug and Jerry's (Greyhound Bus Depot), Sears, Bole's Feeds, and lastly The Port Arthur Clinic.

In 1980, she was reunited with a former flame, John (Les) Siddall and four months later they were married. At this time, Les shared his daughter Mary with us; she quickly became one of the “sisters”! Mom took an early retirement, to stay home and keep an eye on Les. They enjoyed travelling, spending winters in Brownsville, Florida; volunteering at Branch 5 Legion, and with the Naval Association. Mom spent many hours at her second home, “the Legion”, where she held the positions of President/Past President. She could be found in the kitchen, where we the family gave her the name of “The Sandwich Queen”, or working at banquets, funeral luncheons, and teas. She enjoyed working with Les on the Poppy Campaigns, Legion Track meets, and as a chaperone on the bus taking kids to the Legion Sports Camp in Manitoba. Wherever she was needed, you'd find her! Mom and Les enjoyed their yard and deck which was filled with planters of flowers, strawberries, and tomatoes. Mom enjoyed increasing the size of Les' flower gardens to place a few vegetables here and there.

The good times were followed by sad times when she lost her son, Brian in 1997 and Les in 1999, and son-in-law Sandy Ellchook in 2015. Mom was the last surviving member of her family, being predeceased by her sister Stella (Russell/Tozer), brothers Mike and Walter Kostantin.

Mom continued to live in their home at 96 S. Hill St. until she was 90, at which time she moved to The Walford, and then to Bethammi.

Mom's witty sense of humour never left her, as she was still making us laugh in her last days. In the fourteen months she lived at Bethammi, we were blessed with the best of care for her by the amazing group of “angels” on the second floor. Their love and compassion for Mom will never be forgotten. There is no way we can ever thank them for taking ‘Birdie” under their wings and making her feel at home.

In Mom's passing she leaves behind her daughters Betty (Ellchook), Brenda (Phillips), Mary (Siddall-Caban), and Glenna (Landgraff/Hunt). Grandchildren Jeanne Hendry (Carl), Michael Ellchook, Dennis Ellchook (Kristie); Nicole Landgraff-Wegnar (Tim), Ryan Landgraff (Andrea), Ian Landgraff (Amanda); Craig and Mark Phillips (Sheri). Great grandchildren Megan and Sheldon Hunter; Jesse, Dane, and Kylynne Ellchook; Sophia Landgraff-Wegner; Lydia, Hudson, and Juliette Landgraff; Samuel, Naomi, and Jesse Landgraff. God son, Bruce and sister-in-law Anne Kostantin; as well as relatives in Manitoba, and British Columbia.

We would love to invite anyone who knew Alice to celebrate her life at a reception to be held on Saturday, March 12th from 1-4p.m. at the Prince Arthur Waterfront Suites.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in her name to St. Joseph's Foundation, Bethammi Nursing Home or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Annie DuFour and family would like to say that Alice was a wonderful lady, mom (Annie) knew Alice many years ago and just recently renewed their friendship at Bethammi Nursing Home. When Annie found out that Alice was just one floor down, the visiting started. It was so nice to see the two of them talk about the old days. Alice always had a smile on her face. Annie will miss her visits with Alice. Sincere sympathy from Annie Dufour, daughter Cecelia and grand daughter Shelley (who was a psw and cared for Alice). She will be missed.

Alice was a neighbour of mine when she lived on Hill Street. When she was well into her 80's she walked over to the fence by my garage because she had seen two men trying to break into the building. She asked them what they thought they were doing and told them they had better leave, and they quickly did! Such a brave lady.

My condolences to you all.
