Mrs. Salome Catherine Dacey (nee Wallner) of Red River Road, passed away at St. Joseph's Hospice in the early morning hours of Monday, November 9, 2009. Salome was born in 1922 in Hanover, Ontario where she spent her childhood and young adulthood. She worked as a Red Cross nurse during the war years. In June 1950, she came to Port Arthur as a bride. She and her husband Dan were founding members of Corpus Christi parish. Salome served for many years in the senior and funeral choirs, Promoter of the Miraculous Medal, the Legion of Mary, St. Vincent De Paul Society and was a charter member of the Catholic Women's League and the Cursillo movement. For many years she was a phone volunteer at Telecare. Her favourite hobbies were needlework, flower gardening, reading and writing letters. Salome was known to family, friends and neighbours as a thoughtful and caring person. Her grandchildren will always cherish the memory of Nana's peanut butter cookies, homemade soup and heart-to-heart talks. She is survived by her three sons Jim (Elaine), Dennis and Tom; grandchildren Stephan, Caitlin and Jack; brother George (Phylis) Wallner of Guelph; sister-in-law Olive Dacey of Ottawa as well as many nieces and nephews in Ontario and British Columbia. She was predeceased by her husband Dan in 1994; parents Peter and Elizabeth; brothers John who was killed in an RAF raid on Penemunde in 1943 and Joe of Burlington; sisters Sister Mary Salome SSND of Waterdown, Gertrude (Mrs. Jim Davidson) of Kenora. Special thanks to the staff of Thunder Bay Regional, St. Joseph's Hospice, Father Richard, Father Rey and all of Salome's close friends at Corpus Christi, especially Gilles and Connie Boisvert and Joyce Scalzo. Funeral services for the late Mrs. Salome Dacey will be held on Friday, November 13, 2009 with family and friends gathering at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church for the Funeral Mass at 10:00AM celebrated by Fr. Richard Kowalchuk. Interment to follow in St. Andrew's R.C. Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday evening after 6:00PM in the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley St. at Algoma with the Vigil being offered at 7:00PM.
