ADELE ARCHER Obituary

April 27, 1934 ~ January 27, 2026
Adele Rea Archer, former longtime resident of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully in Sault Ste. Marie at the age of 91.

Born in Winnipeg and raised on McKenzie Island in Red Lake, she pursued post-secondary studies at the University of Western Ontario, graduating in 1957, before moving on to the Toronto Teachers' College.

Upon graduation, she moved back to Northwestern Ontario and taught French and History at high schools in Fort William and Port Arthur. Within a few years, Madame Archer joined the staff at Fort William Collegiate Institute, a school where she would become an enduring favourite, spending the majority of her career there until retiring in 1994.

She will long be remembered for her enthusiasm and the expressive way she would teach her classes, rarely sitting down, always engaged in conversation. There are thousands of former students who can attest to this!

She will be greatly missed by her three children Nancy Jane (Kari), Susan (Doug) and John (Kim), as well as her six grandchildren Madelaine, Lauren, William, Benjamin, Emily and Gillian, and also her nephew Timothy. She is predeceased by her husband Lawrie, her sisters Grace and Marjorie, and her brothers Lawrence, Albert and Fred. She is also predeceased by Simon, Bentley, Tess and Katy, her beloved Black Labrador Retrievers.

Madame Archer had many interests and volunteered her time generously. She sold daffodils in April on behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society, served on the society's local board and also found time to drive patients to their appointments. She sat on the board of Magnus Theatre and was a staff representative at F.W.C.I. raising money for UNICEF. She was a longtime member of the Anglican Church Women of Canada (ACW) and the Altar Guild at St. Paul's Anglican Church. She was a Salvation Army volunteer and devoted some of her time to Shelter House.

She was also a proud member of the Canadian Federation of University Women, a group that included a number of close friends with whom she enjoyed many a good Christmas eggnog!

As her family, we are sad she is gone but celebrate the long and wonderful life she lived. We would like to thank the staff at Sault Area Hospital for their care and compassion. And we need to especially thank the staff of the Echo Bay wing at Extendicare Maple View for their warmth and support during the last week before she passed. She was comfortable and well taken care of by wonderful people.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 6 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Anglican Church, 808 Ridgeway Street, Thunder Bay. All are welcome to attend.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.

I as well had Madame Archer in gr 9 French50 years ago. I will never forget the morning Ken and I walked into her classroom after being acknowledged in the newspaper for our participation in minor hockey. She was very kind and generous with her words of recognition for our accomplishment. She was also very kind and generous when she gave me a passing grade for that class. She was a great teacher and a very special lady and I extend my sincere condolences to all who loved her.

So very sorry to hear about Madame Archer. She was my Grade 9 French Teacher and she was a dynamic classroom whirlwind who transmitted her enthusiastic passion for the French language and culture. Until she moved to The Sault used to bump into her occasionally at Symphony concerts in Thunder Bay and it was always a pleasure to reconnect. My condolences to the family.

Madame Archer was my French teacher that was cool-she even let me read Paris Match during class. We had many chats at St. Paul's Church coffee hour and I appreciated her advice as a French teacher myself and her wit. My heartfelt condolences.

Adele lit up a room with her warm smile and big personality. You did not lead her or tell her what to do; you just went along for the ride. Her friends adored her, and husband Lawrie who came back from sales trips cracking the latest jokes. It was an honour to be invited to their beautifully decorated cozy homes. Adele, a Liberal; Lawrie, a Conservative, guaranteed lively conversation. No one cared if Adele was punctual. She wasn't. She was organized and disorganized in her own way. You knew you were in the presence of a special person. Adele = warmth, humour, wide ranging interests, a shared love for the French language, her delight in French words she learned from Bernard St Laurent on the radio program C'est la vie, CBC, her beloved daily Globe and Mail, black labradors, coffee at Robin's, tales of her Roluf family in the movie theatre business, the driving foibles of FWCI history teacher John Stephenson. We will terribly miss you, Adele. A life so well lived, like Edith Piaf you can leave us with "Je ne regrette rien."

Dear Nancy Jane& Family,
Not sure if you remember me or not but we went to Westgate together before you moved out West. I lost Mt Mom in 2019 so I can truly empathize with the immeasurable loss upon your heart & soul this is for all of you. The grief comes in waves and I just wanted to extend my most sincere Condolences as the World grows dimmer when beautifully kind people pass. Should you ever feel the need to talk you now have my email.
With deepest Condolences

Adele Archer was one of the best teachers ever. I was one of her students fifty years ago and I can still hear her voice correcting my grammar and pronunciation. My sympathies to her family.

It was a pleasure having Mme Archer for French at FWCI back in the day. I still enjoy the language, but more, I remember clearly the day she walked in to the classroom and vented "If you learn anything from me this year, let it be to always get the name of the person you are speaking to when calling a government office, and to listen to the CBC." I still do both :) She will be remembered.
