John Staal

Mr. John Staal passed away peacefully at Saint Joseph's Hospital on Sunday, May 11, 2008 at the age of 80 years. John was born in Holland on June 4, 1927. In 1951 he married Lammie Post and they immigrated to Fort William, Canada. He worked at various jobs until 1960. At that time he established Sunshine Landscaping and Sod Farms and over the years, through dedication and hard work, the business grew and became successful. John remained interested and involved in his work until his passing to glory. John was a lifelong, active member of First Christian Reformed Church and a founding member and supporter of Thunder Bay Christian School. John loved his Lord dearly. John's life revolved around his family. He was keenly interested in any new venture that any of his children and grandchildren were involved in. Opa loved to treat his grandkids to golfing, McKellar's Confectionary, Merla Mae and candies at the candy store. He also loved watching his grandkids participate in various sporting events, especially hockey. In the last few years one of his greatest joys was his great grandchildren. John's other interests included antique cars, especially meeting his friends on Thursday nights at the Canadian Tire parking lot. He took a great deal of pride in his yard and spent hours manicuring it to perfection. John fought various health issues over the past twenty-two years and was one of the longest living kidney transplant recipients all the while maintaining a good quality of life. Through the sometimes difficult times he always had the ability to put his grandchildren at ease and usually could be found sharing a laugh or two no matter how difficult the circumstance. John was a special man to many and people were drawn to him because of his sense of humour and strong personality. He will be dearly missed by his large family and circle of friends. John is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Lammie; son Arthur (Ina) and their children Wesley, Myles (Malinda), Darryl (Kristy), Brad, Kayla; daughter Trudy (Pete) Kuipers and their children Heather (Dave), Kristin (Kurtis), Jim, Gary (Melissa), Andrew, Lynda; son Gary (Daune) and their children Erin (Paul), John (Lori), Kim (Dave), Ian; son Henry (Linda) and their children Eric (Tanya), Marc, Jordan, Jared; son Norman (Karen) and their children Neil, Deanine, Shannon and fourteen great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Catrien and brother Bill in Holland. He was predeceased by his parents Auko and Anneke and his brother Henk all from Holland. Visitation with family will be held on Tuesday, May 13 from 7-9 p.m. at First Christian Reformed Church on West Arthur St. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, May 14 at 1 p.m. at First Christian Reformed Church. Friends and family will gather at the church Wednesday for 11:45 a.m. to process to Stanley Hill Cemetery for the interment service at 12:00 noon.
