Mildred Arnold Obituary

Mildred (“Millie”) Grace Arnold (née Trewin) passed away peacefully with family by her side on May 5, 2021 at Pioneer Ridge in Thunder Bay. She was born on November 4, 1921 in Oyen, Alberta, and in 1925, her family moved east by train to Fort William. She resided locally for the remainder of her life.

Growing up, Mildred and her siblings lived at the industrial farm on the Scott highway, where her father was the manager of livestock and farming. To attend high school, Mildred moved to town and worked as a nanny to pay her board.

At 17, Mildred met the love of her life, Wilfred (“Wilf”) Arnold, at a local dance hall. The two shared a love for each other and a love for dancing, and met some of their long-time friends at these dances. They married on June 24, 1940. To be close to the family's commercial fishing business, they built their first home at Green Point the next year. As their family grew, they moved into town, residing on McIntyre Street and Black Bay Road, and retreated to their beloved camp on Lake Superior for their summers.

Millie took pleasure in a variety of hobbies, including knitting, crocheting, spending time in the kitchen, and tending to her many flower gardens, especially “the boat” at camp. Her baking, particularly pie, was always plentiful and will never be perfectly replicated, as she followed her “recipes” by intuition.

But Millie's greatest joy in life was her family. She wanted nothing more than to have everyone she loved together, sharing a meal or afternoon tea and cookies. She would knit wool socks in fun colours for everyone for Christmas and set up Easter egg hunts just to see the delight in her grandchildren's faces. Millie had a gift for making each moment special and memorable.

As the matriarch of the Arnold family, she was and will always be the ultimate role model. Millie's strength, resilience, and playful spirit have impacted and inspired everyone who had the good fortune to cross paths with her. Millie will be missed dearly by those she leaves behind.

Mildred is survived by son James and his children Paul and Laura, daughter Kathryn (Tom) Hantjis and their children Andréa (Josh), Hilary (Deepak) and stepchild Alexandra, and son William (Catherine) and his children Krista (Mark), Cameron (Vanessa), Joshua (Lindsay) and stepchildren Natalie (Andrew) and Valerie. She is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Iris Trewin, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Wilfred, son George, daughter-in-law Betty, great-grandchild Wilfred (in infancy), parents George and Ruth Trewin, siblings Harold, Orval (Ruth), Margaret (Kei) Smith, Kenneth (in infancy), Ron, and Evelyn Lenton, brother-in-law Bill (Tillie), and her faithful little dachshund Tiffany.

The family would like to thank the staff on Plaza 4 at Pioneer Ridge for their extra attention and support in Millie's last days. We are forever grateful for the care she was provided over the past five years.

To honour Mildred's wishes, a formal service will not be held. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to Elevate NWO would be greatly appreciated by the family.

Mrs. Arnold came into my life as a customer for some carpentry work at her beloved camp at Green Point, and I was fortunate to enjoy her love of life and laughter. She was a kind and gentle soul and I consider myself lucky to have spent time in her world. Mrs. Arnold always made me smile. Condolences.

Our family enjoyed many years with Mildred as a neighbour at Green Point. She was an avid gardener and took pride and great care to keep up with the demands of yard maintenance well into her senior years. Mildred always had a warm smile and friendly greeting to share. She will be missed but always remembered.

So sorry to hear of Millie’s passing, I love the beautiful pictures of her, wonderful lady and a very good friend of my deceased Mother, Edith Gagliardi. Millie and Edith spent some good times together, very independent ladies, both had cars and would take turns driving on their many adventures over the years. My condolences to her children and grandchildren and tomorrow is Mother’s Day and we should celebrate Millie and her great life. Remembering two exceptional Moms.
