Robert Malo Obituary

The family of Mr. Robert "Bob" Gerald Malo announces his passing in the early morning hours of Saturday, August 25, 2007 surrounded by the family he loved so much. Bob was 84 years of age and a resident of Pinewood Court. He passed away just one week after celebrating his 60th wedding anniversary with his gal, Sal. Born in and a lifetime resident of Fort William, Bob attended St. Stan's School, graduated from St. Patrick's High School at age 16 and later went on to receive a diploma from the Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transportation. Bob worked briefly at Can-Car before joining the Royal Canadian Navy in 1941 where he was proud to serve until 1945 protecting convoys in the North Atlantic and training "Wrens" for the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service. Bob returned to Can Car in 1945 and worked there until his retirement in 1988 as a foreman in the Shipping & Receiving department. Shortly after the war, Bob met Sally at a dance and he was immediately smitten. Even 60 years later, his eyes lit up whenever she entered the room. Bob was happiest when spending time with his three daughters and their families where he would recount anecdotes from his days in the Navy, tell tales of his outdoor adventures and amuse us with his wonderful sense of humour. This sense of humour was never more evident than when he overcame life's challenges and disappointments with a joke and a grin. Bob enjoyed being outdoors and he was an avid hunter and fisherman. Bob was crowned "Musky King" when he caught a 70 lb. 4 oz. Musky in 1954 during one of his frequent family vacations and he still holds this unofficial World Record. In addition to being a reader for St. Patrick's Cathedral, Bob was often the emcee at parties and events where he enjoyed the singing, the music and the dancing. We will never forget the grace, dignity and acceptance that Bob demonstrated when he faced the painful loss of his memories and, despite Sally's loving care, his independence. He is our hero and we will miss him always. Bob is survived by: his wife Sally (Selma); his daughters Pat (Joe) Piaskowski, Roberta (Mark Clements) Kastern, Linda (Richard) Bell, Calgary; his grandchildren Robert (Sandra) Piaskowski, Ryan (Sandra) Piaskowski, and Darryl (Jaclyn Bjorkstedt) Piaskowski, Melissa (Chris Prochnau) Kastern, Michael Kastern and Matthew Kastern, Christin Bell and Justin Bell; his great grandchildren Alex, Dani, and Kalyn Piaskowski; his brother Richard "Dick" (Shirley) Malo; his sister Edna Lawrence and his brother-in-law Jim Stitt. Bob was predeceased by: his parents Joseph and Emma Malo; his brothers Arnold, Francis and Edward; and his sisters Viola Stitt, Monica Alexander, Florence McDonald and Geraldine Hanson. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Patrick's Cathedral with Rev. Msgr. P. M. Stilla V.G. officiating. Vigil prayers will be offered on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in St. Patrick's Cathedral. Interment will take place in Our Lady of Charity Mausoleum at St. Andrew's Cemetery. Bob's family would appreciate donations to the Alzheimer's Society in lieu of flowers. A tree will be planted in memory of Robert Malo in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove.
