It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the peaceful passing of Angelo Altomare age 89 years, of Thunder Bay on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Angelo was born April 2, 1920 in Rogliano, Cosenza, Italy where as a young man he learned music and became an accomplished player of the clarinet. After serving in the war he married Angela (Lina) Coccari on January 21, 1947. Like so many of his friends in post war Italy, Angelo left his homeland of Calabria to seek a better life for his family. In 1952 he came to Thunder Bay to prepare for and build a life for his family who later arrived in 1956. His early working years were spent with CPR, CNR, Crittall Construction and for 25 years with Shaw Bakery until his retirement. His passion for music, carpentry, gardening and his family were his main interests. He will be remembered as a kind, generous and strong willed person who enjoyed making people laugh with his off the cuff humour. A number of years were spent as a musician for the Port Arthur City Band. He also spent a great deal of time looking after his wife Angela. He later moved to the P.R. Cook Apartments to be near his wife who was a resident of Bethammi Nursing Home. Here he gained many friends and enjoyed their company. After falling ill, he became a resident of Pioneer Ridge-Home for the Aged. Angelo was predeceased by his wife Angela on August 10, 2001 and by his brothers Ernesto and Luigi. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Maria (Bob), son Carm (Ida), grandchildren Rob (Tammy), Michael, Andrew and Emily and great granddaughter Angelina. Other nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for the late Mr. Angelo Altomare, will be held on Monday, August 10, 2009 leaving the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley St. at Algoma at 8:50 AM to St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church for the Funeral Mass at 9:30 AM. Private Family entombment to follow in Our Lady of Charity Mausoleum, St. Andrew's Cemetery. Visitation for friends will be held on Sunday evening after 5:00 PM in the EVEREST CHAPEL with Vigil offered at 7:00 PM.
