Salme Frost Obituary

1930–2021
Salme Elvira Haavisto Frost was born in Sunshine, Ontario, April 16, 1930, and passed from this life on April 17, 2021 at the age of 91. Her parents, Emil and Martta Haavisto, and her older brother Pekka, immigrated to Canada from Finland two years before her birth. When Salme was a baby, her parents cleared a section of land and built a house along the Shebandowan River. Here Salme and her sisters Mae (Walsh) and Joyce (Redden), and brothers Pekka, Roy, and Walter grew up together. Life as farmers and new immigrants was challenging in the early years. Salme shared many of her childhood memories with her own children and grandchildren. She told tales of walking to school in the cold and snow along the railway tracks to Mabella, 3 miles from their home, about bear attacks on the farm animals, and about swimming in the river after a sauna. Salme was proud of her Finnish ancestry, loved to bake and cook Finnish dishes for her family, and continued to speak and read the Finnish language. Throughout her life she maintained a strong connection with her birth family, as well as extended family in Finland. Sally enjoyed gardening and growing an assortment of flowers and vegetables; however, the pride of her garden was the beautiful variety of peonies that bloomed every July. At the age of 18 Sally married Lorne Frost. They were together for 62 years, until the time of Lorne's death in 2011. As a couple they raised six children, Lorne, Mary (Ward), Marlene (Heitland), Bruce, Jim, and Carolyn (Dreyer). As a family they lived in communities in the Thunder Bay area and owned and operated Frosty's Resort on Shebandown Lake. In 1973 they built a home and settled in Shabaqua. Here Sally and Lorne ran Frosty's Baits, and Sally continued the business until her move to Thunder Bay in 2016. Sally is grandmother to 15 grandchildren, and great grandmother to 16. She has many nieces and nephews in the area, as well as her cousins in Finland, who were her pen pals for many years. Sally valued each member of her family and cherished every visit, letter and telephone call. She will be lovingly remembered by all. Sally and her husband Lorne were among the founding members of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kakabeka Falls, and Sally remained a member there for more than 50 years. The rite of Christian burial for Sally Frost will take place at Stanley Hill Cemetery with Pastor Keith Bloom of Redeemer Lutheran Church officiating. Due to Covid-19 restrictions attendance is limited to a small group of immediate family. Donations to Redeemer Lutheran Church Building Fund would be appreciated.

She looks well to the ways of
her household and does not
eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and call
her blessed; her husband
also, and he praises her.
Proverbs 31:27-28

Sorry for your loss. Sally was a great friend to my mom and just a beautiful lady. I really enjoyed the stories she used to tell of younger days in Shebandowan when I’d take my mom for a visit at her home and of course she’d always have a spread of goodies . She will be sadly missed. Kirsti (Christine) and Cathy Lidemark

So sad to hear of Aunite Sally's passing. I remember fondly our Zawacki family visits to Frosty's...there always seemed to be a lot of kids running around and Uncle Lorne and Auntie Sally just rolled with it. Many years later, Michelle and I with kids in tow, visited the Bait shop at Shabaqua Corners. Unannounced visits and yet, a cup of coffee and fresh baking were always waiting for us. Auntie was a special lady with a big heart! Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family. May your hearts be filled with the fond memories of a life well lived.
