1928 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
Elizabeth "Betty" Breeland Obituary
Elizabeth "Betty" Breeland, age 90, passed away peacefully at home in Crystal River, FL surrounded by her family and friends, as she wished.
Betty was born in Florence, SC on March 3, 1928 to the late Florence Cecelia and Marlboro Thomas Bowyer, Sr. She spent her childhood in Miami, FL before her family relocated to Jacksonville, FL. There she met and wed her late husband, Fred Scott Breeland, Jr. while he was serving as a navigator in the U.S. Navy during World War II. They remained married for 67 years until his passing in 2013.
This true Southern lady and dedicated wife accompanied her husband throughout his engineering careers to various homes in SC with detours to Philadelphia, PA and Kobe, Japan. Over the course of her life, Betty remained a devoted mother, grandmother and friend, always remembering birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions with cards and calls. She took pride in her work with The Bell Telephone Co. where she traveled two states compiling information for their directories. She held this job in an era where careers for women were limited.
Fred and Betty happily returned to the coastal life they loved when they retired to Crystal River, FL in 1989. After settling into their forever home, Betty joined the Crystal River Woman's Club where she served on various committees and became a lifetime honorary member. She was a self-proclaimed news junky that never let a day go by without reading her daily newspaper cover to cover and tuning in to local and national news. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, reading, boating, spending time with her family, and getting together with her "Lunch Bunch." She preferred to keep her hands busy and chose to take up Swedish weaving, winning numerous awards for her beautiful handwork.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband and parents; brother, Marlboro Thomas Bowyer, Jr. and sister, Mary Jean Cox.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, F. Scott Breeland, III (Deborah Lane); daughter, Cheri Breeland Nore (Maynard Shrewsbury); son, Mark W. Breeland (Peggy); son, Christopher B. Breeland (Heather); grandson, Erik A. Nore (Ruth); grandson, M. Anderson Breeland; grandson, S. Chase Breeland; granddaughter, Cecilia R. Breeland; great-granddaughter, Isabella A. Nore; and great-granddaughter, Astrid H. Nore.
The family would like to thank Mary Jean, Olga, the staff of Granny Nannies, and Hospice of Citrus and the Nature Coast.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be offered in Betty's memory to Hospice of Citrus and the Nature Coast, P.O. Box 641270, Beverly Hills, FL 34464 or The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 270848, Tampa, FL 33688.
Family and friends may call at Strickland Funeral Home in Crystal River on Friday, May 18 at 10:00am. Funeral Service is at 11:00am in the Strickland FH Chapel. Internment will be at 2:00 pm at the National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL.
