Horace L. Wilkinson, 89
Born on June 17, 1931 in Muncie Indiana to Joseph an d Frances Wilkinson. Horace passed away under the care of Hospice House in Lecanto, Florida on April 2, 2021. His wife of 63 years and son Ross were at his side when he passed.
Horace proudly served his country honorably in the US Marine Corps obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a veteran of the Korean War where he participated in the battle of the Frozen Chosen. After his discharge from the US Marine Corps he attended Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana earning his bachelors degree in education. He was very active as a member of the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity, the Young Republican Club and the Commerce Club. Prior to relocating to Florida Horace coached basketball, baseball and track in the Muncie area.
In 1964 he and his family relocated to Citrus County from Winchester, Indiana where he began his long Florida teaching career first at Citrus High School and then Crystal River High School where he retired in 1993 serving as the driver's ed teacher. While at Crystal River High School he became a successful golf coach, a position which he held and cherished for 21 years. He had a deep and devoted passion for life, his family, friends, his students and an appetite for the game of golf which was unsurpassed by few. In his earlier years he was a 3 handicapper. Horace was a charter member of the Seven Rivers Golf Course and a 30 year member of the Plantation Golf and Country Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Hobart and George and one sister, Janice Wilkinson. Horace is survived by his wife Betty J. Wilkinson, sister Jane A. Wilkinson (Gainesville, FL), sons Joseph Ross Wilkinson (Beverly Hills, FL) and Richard Wilkinson (Virginia Gail) (Crystal River, FL); grandsons, Troy L Wilkinson (Corey) (Carlisle, PA), Andrew Wilkinson (Ocala, FL), Adam Wilkinson (Kailee) (Daytona Beach, FL), granddaughter Angela H. Wilkinson-Lanier (Kapolei, HI), great grandsons, Brendan C. Wilkinson (Crystal River, FL), King Wilkinson (Kapolei, HI) and Waylon Wilkinson (Daytona Beach, FL) great granddaughters, Kaitlynn V. Lanier (Fitchburg, WI) and Kayla L. Lanier-Atayde (Yuma, AZ), and one great great granddaughter, Zendaiah Wilkinson (Vanceboro, N.C.) and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services are under the guidance of Strickland Funeral Home. Cremation will be completed at Strickland Funeral Home. A memorial service will be conducted by Pastor Lloyd Bertine of Gulf To Lake Baptist Church located at 1454 N Gulf to Lake Hwy. in Crystal River, FL on April 14, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. A private ceremony will follow at the National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. Flowers are welcome, but in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HPH Hospice in Lecanto, FL. To sign guest book, memories and condolences may be submitted to: www.Legacy.com.

Horace “Unk” was a lifelong friend. The memories and wonderful stories are many. All captured with Horace enjoying life. God Bless Horace and Family. We love you!

The U.S. Marines, Navy Fleet Marine Force Corpsmen, FMF Chaplains, and Associate Members of the E. I remember him well as a teacher at Crystal River High School. He was my driver's ed teacher. He was a really nice guy. My condolences to him an his family.
