Joan D. Hemsworth Obituary
Joan D. Hemsworth, 97, died Saturday, January 4, 2020 at the Hospice House in Lecanto, Florida. She was one of nine sisters, a WWII nurse, and the mother of seven.
She resided at Cedar Creek Assisted Living Facility in Crystal River for the last five years. She was the widow of Edward J. Hemsworth (Oct. 20, 2016). They were married for 67 years.
Joan is survived by four children; Patricia of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Janet Mulligan (Gerry) of Crystal River; Robert (Cathy) of Staten Island, N.Y.; and MaryAnne of East Stroudsburg, Pa. Three of her seven children are deceased - Edward, Joan Marie and Eileen. She is survived by one sister, Kathleen Polomene of Staten Island, N.Y. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Joan grew up on Staten Island, N.Y. She graduated from Sacred Heart Elementary and St. Peter's High School. She then attended St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn. Following graduation and passing the state boards, she joined the Army Nurses Corp. She served during WWII and was honorably discharged at the end of the war.
She married in 1949 and worked in Richmond Memorial Hospital. When her youngest child entered school, she decided to keep the same hours as her children. Her next assignment was as a school nurse and she also worked in a child health clinic.
Her husband retired from the New York City Fire Department and upon retirement they relocated to Inverness, Florida. Joan continued to work as a nurse at Citrus Memorial Hospital and then as a volunteer school nurse. They lived in a home they built at the Inverness Golf and Country Club where they were both active golfers. Joan was an active bowler in Inverness for many years. She was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays. For the last five years they lived at Cedar Creek in Crystal River and made many new friends. Thank you to the staff for their excellent service.
Friends may call at the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5:00-7:00 PM. where there will be a Wake Vigil Service at 6:30 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, January 9th at 10:30 AM from Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church with Fr. Claudius Mganga, Celebrant. Burial will follow in Florida National Cemetery with Military Honors.
