Philip Maechling Obituary

MAECHLING

Philip Hosmer Maechling, 87, of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2016. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, September 29th at 10:00am at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 8815 East Kemper Road. Visitation with the family will begin at 9:00am. Phil was born on November 4, 1928 in Prescott, Arizona. He grew up in Los Angeles, California and graduated from Loyola High School and Loyola University in Los Angeles. During college Phil was the Manager of the Los Angeles Rams marching band. He served in the United States Air Force Auditor General's Office during the Korean conflict. Phil earned a Master's degree in Education from UCLA. He taught high school business courses before becoming a textbook salesman for South-Western Publishing Company. He worked proudly for South-Western for thirty years, ultimately serving as Executive Vice President before his retirement in 1989. Phil married Joan Murphy in 1952. For the past 64 years, they have been a particularly loving and devoted couple. Phil and Joan were dedicated to community service. They were founding members of Good Shepherd Parish in Cincinnati, as well as of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Naples, Florida. In recent years, they have lived at the Deupree House in Cincinnati, where they spearheaded a project to make more than 1,500 fleece blankets for the homeless. Phil was a kind and gentle man of integrity and deep faith, who was well loved by all who knew him. His quiet strength and deep humility made him an exemplary leader in many settings, including his family, his business, and his church communities. Phil is survived by his wife, Joan; his children Lisa (Mike) Debbeler, Phil (Nady) Maechling, and Anne (Chris) Blake; his grandchildren Nellie, Monica, and Grace Debbeler, Jennings and Likha Sturgeon, Philip James Maechling, Peter, Sarah, Maggie, and Lilly Blake; his siblings, John (Dee) Maechling, Mary (Jack Knoebber) Flynn, and Jim (Jeanne) Maechling, and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Center for Respite Care, 3550 Washington Ave, Cincinnati OH 45229 or to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 1125 Bank St, Cincinnati, OH 45214. 9/21/20 When Phil recommended me to take his Los Angeles territory when he moved to Cincinnati, it was a dream come true. After only 4 years he recommended me for a new position in the Cincinnati office. I was thrilled and moved my family to Ohio. I said, at the time of Phil's passing that he was my hero. He remains so. In retrospect I think Phil saw potential that I didn't see in myself. God bless you my friend. -Robert E. Lewis

Phil was my mentor and my hero...my mentor because he was always a gentleman and always tried to say something good of others...my hero because he brought me into the South-Western family which was the best thing that ever happened to me. I will always have the fondest memories of Phil and his family.

Dear Joan and Family,

I had the privilege of getting to know Joan and Phil from their blanketed with love ministry. They would bring blankets to the homeless clients at the Center for Respite Care. Those blankets brought more than warmth to the clients, it was truly a sign of love and hope. Many had never had their own blanket. However, they didn't just minister to the clients. My life was touched by the kindness and love of both of you! I'm thankful that God allowed our paths to cross in this journey of life. Phil was a kind, loving and compassionate man. He will always hold a special place in my heart! There is no doubt in my mind that he is with our Savior hearing the words....well done good and faith filled servant!

My prayers will continue for your family during this difficult time.

In His love,
Charlotte Boemker

Phil was an incredibly sincere colleague whom I had the privilege of working with for two decades. He cared about everyone on his staff like few ever had, and no need went unnoticed. Fond memories of his annual golf parties and spending Thanksgiving together will always be with me.
