Joseph Whitt Obituary

Joseph Whitt

Monroe Township - Joseph V. Whitt, age 97, of Bethel, Ohio, passed away April 14, 2021. Joe was the beloved husband of Judith L. Whitt (nee Berger), and devoted father of Rodney V. (Judy) Whitt and Carolyn M. (Jon) Larson. Joe was proud to have six grandsons, those being: J. Scott (Rebecca) Larson, Peter S. (Melissa) Larson, Stephen J. (Elizabeth) Larson, Daniel A. (Kristy) Larson, Christopher (Melanie) Shepherd, and Casey D. Whitt. He also had seven great-grandchildren. Born in Elliott County, Kentucky in 1923, Joe was one of nine children of Estill and Sarah Whitt. Surviving siblings are his sister, Alice, and his brothers Richard and Roy. Those who have since passed are brothers Arnold, J.B., and Gene, and sisters Bobbie Lee and Betty.

Joe was a World War II Navy veteran, having served from January, 1941 until November, 1946. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor and actually heard the first and last shots of the war fired, ready to invade Okinawa, when the war ended. He was aboard the heavy cruiser, U. S. S. San Francisco, for most of his combat but later served aboard the battle cruiser, the U. S. S. Alaska. Working with wood, enjoying white water rafting and all things outdoors, and square dancing were favorite pastimes of Joe's. He was a very unique individual and one anybody would have been proud to have called friend. Joseph V. Whitt will be greatly missed. E.C. Nurre Funeral Home, 177 West Main Street, Amelia, Ohio 45102, will open their doors from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Monday, April 19, 2021, for visitation. Funeral services will be held at this same location on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, beginning at 1:00 P.M. Should you so desire, memorial contributions may be sent directly to Pacific Historic Parks, P.O. Box 29940, Honolulu, Hawaii 96820-2340.

Joe was a friend of our Dad, Denver, from when they worked at Coca-Cola together. We have good memories of visiting Joe when he rented out the farm house where we were able to fish from the pond there. It was nice countryside and fun to walk around. Joe was a great ghost story teller, with some of the experiences he had when living at the farm area. His dog, King, a beautiful dog, was a joy to be around. My siblings toured the land further out, and found a Native American cemetery, that at the time Joe did not know about, a great discovery. It was a beautiful place to live. I enjoyed visiting with Joe at a Coke Alumni luncheon some years back. May the strength you gave others continue to be extended to one another. Charlene Davidson

I was fortunate to meet Joe and Judy when they where guests of the Lakota HS Marching Band during its trip to Hawaii. Joe's generosity in sharing his memories of his service and Dec. 7th with the students was extraordinary, since he was their age when he went into the service. I know he made an impression those students will carry with them for many years to come. It brought to life for those students a vital part of our country's history.

I will always remember Joe, have thought of him often working with him at Coca-Cola up to his retirement. When he walked into the shop he brought a smile to your face and always had a great story to tell. He truly loved square dancing and seen him and his wife at a few fairs dancing on stage. A true Patriot, husband, father and friend. Prayers to the family and may the Lord receive him.
