BRADY Andrew J., former band and orchestra director at Western Hills High School. Died Saturday morning one week after his 89th birthday at Twin Towers Nursing Home where he had been a resident for two and one half years. He had previously lived in Bridgetown for 53 years. Mr. Brady was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas on January 3, 1915, the eight and last child of the late Lawrence and Hubertina Brady. He attended Arkansas State University for two years studying journalism. He decided on music and music education for his career and completed his Bachelor's and Master's degrees at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. He began a long career at Western Hills High School in 1945 and was the band and orchestra director there for 32 years before retiring in 1976. His career was filled with notable accomplishments - 30 years of presenting Bandwagon, a yearly variety show, the first of which included performances by Rosemary and Betty Cloney. Many of his students successfully pursued careers in music as performers and educators and several became band and orchestra directors. The West Hi band and orechestra, under Mr. Brady's direction, were awarded numerous superior ratings at yearly state competitions. He also conducted many youth band concerts during the summers at the Cheviot Westwood YMCA and conducted concerts in Cincinnati parks every summer for years. He was also a composer and arranger and taught trumpet privately for decades. After his retirement in 1976, he organized the talent for the Cheviot-Westwood Kiwanis annual Harvest Home Festival for more than 20 years and for two years he and his wife, Frances, were honored as grand marshals at the Harvest Home Parade. He was a devoted member of the Cheviot-Westwood Kiwanis organization from 1977 until his death and played the piano at weekly luncheons. In 1992 he received the Kiwanis citizen of the year award. In 1995 he received the Annual Award by the Western Hills Aumni and at the time the band room at West Hi was named the Andy Brady Band Room. He also was awarded the distinguished teaching award by the Cincinnati Public Schools. Andy Brady was devoted to his family. His wife of 60 years, Frances Feltz Brady, predeceased her beloved husband in 2001. Mr. Brady is survived by his daughters, Patricia Brady of Saratoga Springs, New York and Susan (Philipp) Stoeberl of St. Louis, MO., three grandchildren, Brady Schuerman of Philadelphia, PA., Dr. Amy (Michael) Schuerman-Gen of Boston, MA. and David (Angela) Stoeberl of St. Louis, MO.. He was delighted to meet his two great-grandchildren this past Christmas, Joshua Donald Gen and Katharine Zoe Gen. Mr. Brady is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and his sister-in-law Mary Drake. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at St. Jude Church, 5924 Bridgetown Road at 10 A.M.. The interment will be immediately following at New St. Joseph Cemetery. There will be a gathering o friends and family at the Westwood Presbyterian Church after the interment. All are invited to come with their memories and stories and celebrate the life of Andy Brady.
