RAWLINGS

Dr. John W. Rawlings was born on January 29, 1914, and inherited his heavenly home at the age of 99 on January 30, 2013. He was the husband of the late Orelia Willie Rawlings. He is survived by his second wife, Mary Pruitt Rawlings; four sons, Herbert, Harold, Carrol, and George; nine grandchildren, Steven Rawlings, Jonathan Rawlings, James Rawlings, Catherine Lawrence, Ruth Snell, Joseph Rawlings, Bill Rawlings, Scott Rawlings, Lindsay Rawlings; and 17 great grandchildren. He was born and raised near Cave City, Arkansas. He married Orelia Mobley in 1931, and before she passed away in 2007, they had been married 75 years. He made a commitment to enter full-time ministry at the age of 25 and moved his wife and three young children to Fort Worth, Texas in the summer of 1939. He enrolled in Bible Baptist Seminary, a school founded by Dr. J. Frank Norris, one of the most influential and colorful preachers in the nation at the time. In 1940, Dr. Rawlings became pastor of Central Baptist Church in Tyler, Texas, while still a seminary student. He began with a congregation of 37, and when he left Tyler a little over 11 years later, the church had grown to 1,500 in weekly attendance. In 1951, he accepted a call to pastor Lockland Baptist Church in Lockland, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati, where he remained for 43 years. In December, 1963, the church moved three miles north to a beautiful 170 acre location in Evendale, Ohio, and the name of the church was changed to Landmark Baptist Temple. In the 1970's, the church was considered to be one of the country's ten largest. For almost 30 years, The Landmark Hour radio broadcast blanketed more than half of the U.S., and even reached into some foreign countries. Dr. Rawlings helped found the Baptist Bible Fellowship in 1950 and served two terms as President of that organization. He also helped establish Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, and served as Executive Vice President of that institution for almost 15 years. By the early 1970's, it would become the nation's largest Bible College. Along with his four sons, he launched The Rawlings Foundation in 1995, and served as administrator of that Foundation until his death. Millions of dollars were funneled into youth camp facilities and Bible Institute campuses around the world during his seventeen year management of the Foundation. He established the International Baptist Network in 2002, a network of conservative Baptist churches and pastors, the purpose of which was to assist in fulfilling the Great Commission of Jesus Christ. Dr. Rawlings was the recipient of many honorary degrees during his ministry, but his greatest longing was to hear his Master say, "Well done good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of the Lord." Visitation will be at Landmark Baptist Temple, 1600 Glendale - Milford Rd., Evendale on Monday, February 4, 2013 from 10 AM til time of funeral service at 11 AM.

What a great man of God. He married me and my late husband in 1974. I know my Dad (Rev. Ron Langdon) and Pastor John are now stolling over heaven talking about the good times they had at Landmark Baptist Temple. One of these days I will see all my loved ones again. Prayers to the family, Love in Christ, Janet Langdon Cornette Thompson.

Dr. john will be remembered for his stand on the bible and for his fundamentalism. he never backed down and he always stood firm on his beliefs. What a powerful preacher of the gospel he was. the landmark hour was his most powerful voice to reach others with the gospel of christ. No other preacher could ever take his place. His shoes will be hard to fill. Thou shalt be missed because thy seat shall be empty.

It was a honor to have known and severed
with a man of his character, and often times when preaching in jails and streets, and things look dim,I would think back at his courage and go on.

One of the most fundamental preachers of our day. dr. john was the most stalward of any. his stand and his message was to be admired. great is thy faithfulness. three churches stood out dayton bapt temple and bro. fleming then grace bapt and howard sears but brightly shining among them all was landmark. the landmark hour could be heard almost everywhere. His favorite song till the storm passes by and the landmark choir was gifted. thou shalt be missed because thy seat shall be empty.

The Lord brings significant people into our lives for His purposes. Dr. John Rawlings was unique, a ‘fighter,' had a sense of humor, and was a strong leader. His pastoral ministry impacted my early Christian development.

God has blessed all of us in so many ways through 'The Preacher'. He was a GIANT MAN OF GOD. He had insight and foresight, and a work ethic that exceeded any we have ever known. Harold worked for Dr. John 30 years/from 1964 until 1994 when Dr. John moved to head up The Rawlings Foundation. Harold continued working at LBT until his retirement in 2005. Our loss is certainly Heaven's gain! Surely, he gave our son, Darrin, one of his big ole' bear hugs when he arrived in Heaven. The Rawlings family will always be special to us--you are in our prayers.

Sometimes I would listen to Dr. Rawlings on my car radio but most of the time I would lie in bed, on Sunday nights, and listen to him on Big Wagi, WAGI-FM in Gaffney, SC. Sadly, that station has left religious broadcasting and is a Hispanic station. Dr John was a great mentor to our pastor and he announced Sunday night that Dr Rawlings had passed and he just couldn't get it off his mind. Dr Rawlings was one of the true giants of the faith, tall men, sun-crowned. May God comfort his family as I know HE will.
February 6, 2013
Bro. fleming from dayton baptist temple then howard sears and the greatest of them all Dr. john rawlings. The giants are in heaven. It was known in some circles as the big 3 but Landmark was the one that shone brightly and had the greatest inpact on many lives. Loved till the storm passes by. Dr. John Rawlings was truly one of God's
champions of truth and righteousness. I heard him for many years on "The Landmark Hour" for many years over
WAGI-FM in Gaffney,SC. I got to hear hear and meet him in person at Liberty
University from 1977-81. His voice had a "downhome and folksy style" and was a
personable individual. He will be truly
missed. Our prayers will be with the church and his family as well.

How fortunate I was to be raised at Landmark Baptist Temple under the leadership of Brother John in the late 60's and early 70's.

I remember as a young child Pastor Rawlings babtizing me.

I was sort of scared to be put underneath the water but he explained to me that he wouldn't let go of me and that everything would be OK. His smiling face was the first face I saw.

What a man of God. I'll never forget him.

As a young man, I listened to Pastor Rawlings on radio while traveling back to Dayton on Sunday evenings, where I worked from 1968 to 1971. I would often drive around Dayton on Sunday evenings just to be able to listen to his broadcast when I did not have to travel out of town. He was an important influence on my life and I will always be grateful for his faithful, unwaivering, conservative stance on Scripture and His love for God. I will never forget his strong voice and his style of preaching. I have longed to follow in the footsteps of such men of God during the past 42 years of ministry that God called me to fulfill. May the Lord give us more Godly Mentors like Dr. John W. Rawlings.

I was priviledged to have been personally acquainted with Dr. Rawlings during the time he was a student at Bible Bapt. Seminary in Ft. Worth. Dr. Rawlings and my brother, Lloyd Falls were good friends for a period of about 2 yrs. We lost contact with him when he moved to Cincinnati. We did not have the opportunity to visit with him due to the distant factor, but have always held Dr. Rawlings to the highest esteem.

When Bro.Rawlings came to the Home Mission Conferences in Yakima WA at Bro. Dennis Brown's church I grew to enjoy his sermons. He had a way of captivating an audience. Dr. John,
Influenced my life in many ways. I was invited to preach at a Baptist Bible Fellowship International meeting at the Landmark Church en my early years as a missionary. Since then he has called me a couple of times on the phone and gave a generous offering to our already established Peruvian revolving fund. Just a man saved by grace, but I believe a man used of God.

I had the privilege and pleasure of working at Landmark and serving in the ministry there when Dr. John was the pastor. One special memory I have is how he insisted that Kati Holman and I sing in nearly every service. He said it was because we 'sounded good and always looked like we just stepped out of a hat box'. At the time I wasn't familiar with that idiom, but when Dr. John said 'Sing!', we sang! I now know what a sweet compliment that was and it always warms my heart to think of it again.

He was a fascinating man - somehow both gentle and austere at the same time.

Even after not seeing him for several years, he immediately hugged me and asked about my children by name, genuinely concerned about them. Even though I knew we were just three of the thousands of individuals he knew personally and genuinely cared about, he made me feel very special to him. And I knew he did that with each of those thousands of people. I've never met anyone with his capacity, breadth and depth. What a legacy! What a pastor! What a mentor! What a friend!

It was 1971. We were young Christians looking for a different church. We turned on the car radio and accidentally found the "Landmark Hour " already on the air...WHO was this preacher? We listened intently and sensed the Holy Spirit moving us in an unusual way. Was there a church like that in our local area? WHERE? At the end of the broadcast, we heard something like, "You have been listening to the "Landmark Hour" from Cincinnati, OH, ..with Dr. John W. Rawlings, Pastor." The next weekend found us in Cincy looking for Landmark Baptist Temple. Mr. & Mrs Ball greeted us at the front foyer and introduced us to Dr. Rawlings. As we sang "To God be the Glory" , we knew we were in a special place. The message that morning was packed with the Word of God. This preacher was definitely not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ! We were blessed that morning and returned for the evening service.
Dr. Rawlings took us into his office and told us where we might find an Independent Baptist Church in our area. He opened a file with a list of only 3. 1 each in Ohio, WV,and KY. We lived less than 3 miles from Temple Baptist Church, Flatwoods, KY! Newly organized and with a young BJU Preacher, Douglas McCaleb, the church had only 11 members. The work there was young and so were we. The Lord led us there to serve and we obeyed. We heard Pastor Rawlings many times at Landmark as well as Thomas Road Baptist Church, Lynchburg, VA in the 1980s. It was 42 years ago that Dr. Rawlings had a big impact on our lives.
We are forever grateful that he took the time to chat with us and pray for our need. He has done so much for so many. This dynamic servant of God is with Him now. Well Done faithful servant!

My grandmother passed away in 1972 and today I was reflecting on her life and remembering Dr. Rawlings. Many have said Dr. John broke the mold, and that he did. I and my family will forever be grateful for the spiritual heritage we received growing up at Lockland and Landmark Baptist Temple. Dr. John's emphasis on missions resulted in our going to the field of Brazil. We were privileged to have had Dr. John in our home when he spoke to our Brazilian pastors and church. We will never forget his teaching our congregation the "Horse Theology". He said, "People, keep your eyes on the horse, not on his remains". No one has forgotten that simple, yet graphic lesson, and He lived it on this earth. No matter what mess he found himself in, He kept his eyes on Jesus. We greatly appreciate his passion for God's Word and the ministry. Our prayers are with the entire Rawlings Family.

The giants are going home from the battle. We who remain to carry on are blessed to have known them. We are encouraged by their steadfastness. It falls to us, to this generation, to stand strong. Dr. Rawlings stood for the Lord like granite before his generation. Perhaps 10 years ago we sat across a dinner table with him and his son, Harold, in Cebu City, Philippines; gleaning from him wisdom that God sent our way through this choice servant. We're grateful for the opportunity to have known him. His rest will be sweet and his joy beyond compare! Indeed, rest well faithful servant.

My heart was saddened when I heard the news of Dr. Rawling's passing. He will be greatly missed by myself, my family and many others. He was a great influence in my life and spoke for me many times in my small mountain church in the mountains of Western North Carolina. I considered him to be a friend and it seemed he had way of calling me just when I needed a word of encouragement. Dr. Rawlings, I truly believe God will say,"Well done, thy good and faithful servant". Pastor, Bud Parker

Because of Dr. Rawlings' impact in my life I am in full-time Christian service today. I am but one of hundreds if not thousands. I am filled with gratitude for a man who answered God's call with a passionate, resounding "yes" and embraced that calling with his whole heart, mind, body and spirit. I am honored to have been greatly influenced by him. His passing, while sad for a season, adds to my anticipation of Heaven and heightens my sense of mission until I am called home.

Dr Rawlings was the greatest Pastor anyone could ever have. I grew up under his preaching and worked for him for 20 years in the Landmark Kiddie Kollege. He was such an influence on my entire family. We have so much love and respect for him. He will truly be missed. All I can think about is him entering Heaven and meeting The Lord. What a reunion. Prayers for the entire Rawlings family.

Dr John was my family's pastor for many, many years. Started at Lockland and continued at Landmark. He asked my Grandma Ball to work in the nursery, Grandpa Ball was an usher and many uncles have been involved in the ministry at Landmark. Dr. John performed many marriages and it was 51 years ago he married my parents Ben and Nola. I attended and graduated from Landmark Christian in 1980 after we moved back to Ohio from Indiana, and even in Indiana he was involved with the church we attended. He was (is) a great man of God and we love him and can't wait to see him and so many others in heaven one day. My prayers go out to the family for comfort, the reunion one day will be amazing!

"Well done thy good and faithful servant" Praise God for using Dr. John to bring so many to Christ. Dr. John demonstrated a life of compassion, love, leadership, vision, moral character and self-discipline. He was our preacher for over 50 years. We will miss his phone calls and sweet encouraging words and of course that wonderful raspy voice. Dr. John will remain in our hearts through out eternity. May God comfort his family. We will miss one of our present day heroes of the faith. I cannot begin to say what an impact this man of God had on my life as a new Christian 18 years old in 1974 that was dropped off at the doorstep of Landmark Baptist Temple. The Lord used His teaching and preaching and words of wisdom at the Men's Prayer Breakfast and personal counsel to prepare and shape us for the Lord's Service. We will not say goodbye but see you later brother.I have heard you quote I Corinthians 15:58 what seemed one hundred times. I can say as a personal testimony, Dr. John your labor was not in vain.

Dr. John has left a legacy that has spanned generations. Having grown up at Landmark, the challenge of the Great Commission always came from the pulpit and I am but one piece of fruit as a result. He has been a friend to my entire family and has encouraged us all in our walk and service for the Lord. I am grateful to be serving here in Europe and felt his encouragement for our present place of service. On behalf of One Another Ministries International, we send our prayers and gratitude for his life.

Dr Rawlings came to preach for us in Rochester, IN. In his typical straightforward way, he said of our old church building, "If you ever get out of this old barn, this church will really take off!" He was quite an encouragement to me as a young pastor. God bless his loved ones.

Performed my wedding ceremony in 1965 when we had a problem finding someone who would perform a marriage between a Catholic and a divorced Protestant. How well I remember this kindness.
