Arthur ADAMSON Obituary

ADAMSON

Arthur P. Adamson, a Cincinnati-area resident for over 50 years, died in Philadelphia on May 3, 2014 at age 95. Art was married for 59 years to the late Florence (Smith) Adamson of Schenectady, NY. He is survived by son David Adamson, daughter Judith Adamson, five grandchildren Glenn and Peter Adamson, Kevin, Megan, and Caroline Adamson-Jackes, two great-grandchildren Sophia and Johanna Adamson, brother Charles Adamson, and five nephews and five nieces. From his childhood in rural Kansas and education in a one-room schoolhouse, Art went on to graduate at the top of the class of 1941 from the University of Southern California's School of Engineering. He spent his entire career in engineering and engineering leadership with General Electric, working near Schenectady and at several other sites before spending the last 30 years of his career at GE's Evendale (Cincinnati), OH, plant. While with GE, he led advanced rocket and jet engine design programs, and became a world leader in jet engine design, responsible for the design of engines that remain widely used on commercial wide-body jet aircraft. Art received many awards for excellence in engineering leadership from GE and outside engineering organizations. When not working, he was a devoted husband and father, as well as an avid downhill skier, tennis player, world traveler, wood carver and a prolific reader. All who knew Art will miss his intelligence, good humor, wit, integrity, energy and wisdom. The family asks that gifts in memory of Arthur Adamson be directed to one of the following charities: Coffeyville Aviation Heritage Museum [2002 N. Buckeye St. Coffeyville, KS 67337] where there's an Arthur Adamson display; 506 Foundation Inc. [Altamont, KS 67330] supporting the Arthur Adamson scholarship for Labette County High School students; GE Aviation Community Service Fund [GE Aviation, CSF, PO Box 15037, Cincinnati, OH 45215-0037] supporting charitable works in Cincinnati and honoring the Arthur Adamson Award for innovative engineering design; Philadelphia Scholars [1709 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Suite 700, Philadelphia PA 19103] supporting STEM scholarships. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Adamson family. Art was an amazing man, and certainly a legend in his industry. He shared some of his stories with me over the years, and I was honored to have known him. He will be missed.
