Diane CALKINS Obituary
CALKINS
Diane Kay, nee Sheffler age 68, passed away September 18, 2015, beloved wife of David Lee Calkins for 47 years, loving friend of Wayne and Dottie Baxter, sister of David and Leroy Sheffler. She was a loving, generous, kind-hearted person who loved the outdoors and her many trips to her childhood farm in Iowa. She leaves behind many friends, relatives, and her beloved cats. Diane was a teacher for 31 years for Norwood Public Schools and an organist for many local churches, most recently Groesbeck United Methodist. She loved golf and won the state championship 3 times. She was also inducted into the Legends of Golf in 2005. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd Sheffler and Ruth (Stevenson) Sheffler. Visitation will be Monday, September 21, 2015 from 5-8 p.m. at Groesbeck United Methodist, 8871 Colerain Ave., Groesbeck, Ohio 45251. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at 10 a.m. at the church with burial following in Venice Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Groesbeck United Methodist Church or to Hospice of Cincinnati, P.O. Box 633597, Cincinnati, Ohio 45263-3597. wwwcharlesyoungfuneralhome.com.

I substituted last year for Diane at the UMC church and played Roger Heather's organ. It was a fantastic experience. Many years ago she substituted for me when I played at Walnut Hills Christian Church. She was undoubtedly a fabulous, caring person! Karen Evert fellow AGO member.

Very saddened to learn of Diane's sudden passing. A very friendly and talented person, I never had the opportunity to play golf with her. Perhaps we can do so sometime later.

I was privileged to know Diane as a wonderful golfer and warm friendly person. She was an inspiration to watch with her golf and I was able to play a round or two with her. She will be missed.

I'm sorry for your loss. I was fortunate to teach with Diane at Allison Elementary in Norwood, Ohio. She was so kind to me and helped whenever needed with musical productions performed by the students. She was a genuine, caring person and wonderful colleague who loved life! She will be missed!

We have been deeply saddened by Diane's passing. She was an outstanding person whose many talents included playing competitive golf at a very high level. We are proud that she was named a Legend of Cincinnati Golf in 2005.

David, I am filled with sadness about Diane passing so prematurely. I taught with Diane at Allison when I was there from 1970-1976. I always admired her positive attitude and her smile...such a genuine human being. She probably knew me as Carol Burkhart and Carol Wolford. I will keep you in my thoughts.

Mrs. Calkins was my 6th grade teacher back in 1970-71, as well as my kick ball & softball coach. She was a special teacher & person whom will always be remembered with fond memories. I will miss Diane greatly. Her musical talent was such a blessing to all of GUMC. She added even more dimension to the sound of Instruments of Praise. Her smile, kindness, and genuine love for people was evident. Rest in Peace, Diane. You will be tickling the ivories with the Angels now.

Mrs. Calkins was one of my teachers at Norwood Middle School. She helped expand my love of reading with her Newberry Award program, and I will never forget her. Thank you, Mrs. C, for being there for me.

Mrs. Calkins was my 6th grade teacher at Allison Elementary 38 years ago and one of my favorites. I remember how special it was to help her clean her classroom at the end of the school year and how she treated us to lunch afterwards. She was a wonderful teacher and role model and I wanted to express my sincere condolences to her family.
