Gary Kreider Obituary

Gary Paul Kreider

Gary Paul Kreider June 7, 1938 - March 31, 2021. Gary was born in Newark, Ohio to Kenneth and Josephine Kreider. He came to the University of Cincinnati in 1956, earning his BS, MA, and JD. His love for the Reds kept him in Cincinnati and allowed him to meet the true love of his life, Barbara Browne. Married in 1962, he and Barb began to raise their family, building his legal practice and the farm of their dreams. He leaves behind Barbara, and his children Kenneth Paul Kreider and Emily (Bolinger), Katherine Ann Greifenkamp and Marc, Krista Jo Riblet and Jonathan, Karen Elizabeth Gaunt and James, and Kimberly Ellen Bordeleau and Jean-Philippe, as well as nine grandsons, three granddaughters, his nephew the Honorable David Kreider and wife Consuelo, niece Amy Kreider and husband Jack Pratt, and his brother and sister-in law, Tom and Pam Kreider. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Nancy and a granddaughter, Caroline.

Gary was a founder and partner at Keating Muething & Klekamp for over fifty years and served as a mentor and teacher to generations of attorneys there. He helped lead the firm in its growth and was in demand as a corporate M&A and securities attorney in the region, representing many Cincinnati area companies that went public in the 1970s and 1980s. He was an adjunct professor of securities law at UC Law School for many years. He served on the boards of LSI Industries Inc., Meridian Bioscience, Inc. and other private companies and trusts. His law school classmates and partners at KMK were some of his best and treasured friendships. He valued the array of friendships made through his long tenure as a member of the Camargo Hunt Club, the University Club of Cincinnati, The Ohio Society, and the Travel Club of Cincinnati. He served as an officer or on the boards of these organizations. He served also on the New Richmond School Board, Parish Council at St. Peter's Catholic Church in New Richmond and was a past chair of the Corporations Committee of the Ohio State Bar Association.

He had an enduring passion for animals, especially his beloved horses and dogs, working and gardening on his farm in New Richmond, founding and operating Riverside Stables, and The Riverside Racing Company. He loved art and culture, enjoying every opportunity to take in performances of Cincinnati Opera, the Cincinnati Symphony, and the May Festival. Gary was a history buff, an interest that fostered his desire to travel. Along with Barb, he traveled the globe - and was appreciative to have been able to step foot on every continent. He relished gourmet meals enjoyed with (and often cooked by) Barb, family, and friends. He felt privileged to have a career in the law like his father, and while he was impressed by each of his children's' accomplishments, was particularly proud watching son Ken, daughter Karen and nephew David continuing his and his father's legal legacy. He avidly followed the equestrian pursuits of all four daughters over the years. He was very fond of his grandchildren, and for all of his life's accomplishments, he always said marrying Barb and raising a family together with her was his greatest achievement.

Gary's colleagues and friends at KMK, American Financial and elsewhere valued his legal wisdom, interspersed with an irreverent sense of humor which he kept until the end. Many will remember his "words and sayings to live by" including his oft-repeated admonition Illegitimi non carborundum ("Don't let the bastards grind you down").

In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be made to Hospice of Cincinnati and Clermont County Senior Services, who provided merciful care, or to Loveway in Elkhart, Indiana, in honor of his grandson Jonny. Visitation at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, 5950 Kellogg Avenue, 4 to 6 pm Tuesday, April 6. Catholic High Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 472 Beaver Road in Walton, Kentucky, 10 am Wednesday, April 7. A memorial reception will follow 4 to 6 pm on Wednesday April 7 at the University Club, Fourth and Broadway, downtown. Burial will be private.
