G. EDISON HILL
ASHEVILLE - Attorney G. Edison Hill passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, November 26.
Born in Chocowinity, North Carolina in 1925, he was the second son of the late Lizzie Ida Lewis Hill and Plum Irving Hill. He is survived by his wife and the mother of his children, Helen Troy Craft Hill; three children, Marcus Edison Hill (Donna Barnes); Michael Craft Hill (Ingrid); and Melissa Helen Hill (Steven Crell); and two grandchildren, Christopher Marcus Hill and Eliza Jade Hill Crell. He is also survived by three sisters, Dot Blount (Norman) of Richmond; Lea "Boots" Fields (Milton) of Rocky Mount; and Nicky Bruce of Greensboro; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He began his life on a tobacco farm, enlisted in the United States Navy at age of 18, and served his country in World War II in the South Pacific. He loved every day of his more than fifty years of practicing law. His empathy and sincere efforts to help others inspired all those lucky enough to be around him. His dedication to the Democratic Party and many liberal causes were lifelong passions. He found a way to smile every day. He had a joke for everyone but never a complaint. His courage and determination to live life his own way will be remembered by all who knew him.
In a final act of generosity, he donated his body to UNC Hospital for education and research. His spirit lives on in all the people he touched.
Please join his family to smile and celebrate his beautiful life at his home in Asheville from 4 until 11 p.m. on Saturday, December 1.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the G. Edison Hill Scholarship Fund at: General Scholarship Fund at UNC-Chapel Hill, c/o Office of University Development, Attn: Annie Nienaber, P.O. Box 309, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

Some people pass through leaving the world just as they found it. Edison left it a brghter world. When you saw him, you always walked away with a happier heart and a smile on your face. He truly loved and cared about others. He didn't hear you, he listened to you. He was a role model to all as a husband, father, and friend. He was a person with integrity and high morals. I can just see him up in heaven telling his jokes to everyone. Our sympathy and love to his lovely wife, family and friends. We will miss you!!

Edison told a wonderful tale about years ago meeting Ralph Smedley, the founder of Toastmasters International, and a man as humble as Edison himself. For someone in the Toastmasters universe, that was like sitting at the right hand of God. Which is where Edison surely is now, probably telling a joke.

One of my most fond memories with Edison included a night at the piano bar, dancing and laughing. He made me feels so special, beautiful and a part of a different generation of swanky jazz speakeasies. I was 10 years old. It was wonderful. I love you Edison. I love you Helen. I love you Melissa.

G. Edison Hill was my superhero because I had the pleasure of watching him save lives everyday. Over the years, I watched him save houses for families, marriages from divorce, addicts from drugs, the poor from greed, companies from failure, children and the elderly from neglect, women from abuse, and men from themselves. He was known throughout Western North Carolina as the working man's lawyer and I never saw him turn a sole away. You could come to his office in your dirty coveralls without an appointment, without a penny in your pocket and without a hope in the world and he would clear off his desk, lean back in his chair and listen to your troubles. You could meet him at the Courthouse five minutes before your Court appearance and he would represent you having never even met you beforehand. He took his own time to visit you at your home, in jail, at the hospital or the nursing home and when he mowed his lawn, he kept his phone on his hip in case you needed him. He wouldn't turn you away, you wouldn't be billed and you were never judged. He was such a warm light in a sometimes cold and dark world and today there is a hole in my heart and a hole in the world at 29 North Market Street. Mr. Hill was my hero, my strength, my light in the world, my best friend, my mentor, my biggest fan, my second father, my inspiration, and my boss. He taught me that the best way to live in this world is to help others and to tell jokes while you do it. Thank you for everything Mr. Hill & Love Always, Ms. Cole

Edison was a good man with a special sense of humor,he will bemissed.

Edison was my dear friend. As many of you know we, and some other lawyers and judges, had lunch together almost every day for almost 20 years. Most days he would have a new (or not so new) joke for us and we eagerly anticipated them. I don't believe I ever heard him complain about any thing or any person. How someone could be that chipper every day is beyond me, but he was. Even after his retirement he still came to lunch often but as his health faded he came less and less. Just last week he came to lunch with a new joke, as usual. We all had a good laugh. He will be dearly missed by all of us. While this is said about many people, the world is truly a lesser place without him.

Edison will be deeply missed by so many. I was lucky enough to have known him for almost 20 years working as a paralegal at an office on the same street as his. Saw him most every day at Magnolia's during lunch and he would never pass our table without telling a joke, which made my day. Such a wonderful man!

Mr. Hill touched everyone he passed in so many ways. Each time our paths crossed, I was elevated, lighter and happier than I was before I saw him. I will miss the opportunity to see him strolling around town with his lovely wife, spreading joy and laughter. If there was one wish I could make for my son, it would be that he is as happy and lovely an individual as Mr. Hill. I will miss him. I'm lucky to have had the opportunity to have called him my friend.
