GEORGE LOUIS

SALAZAR

WEAVERVILLE - George Louis Salazar, 66, of Weaverville, NC, passed away Thursday, November 29, 2012, suddenly at his home and was taken to Mission Hospital.

George was born to the late Segundo and Dorothy Sams Salazar in DesMoines, IA, but grew up in Brooklyn, NY. He is also preceded in death by his Father-in-law, Robert H. Smith, St. Johnsbury, VT. He served our country in the United States Navy on a nuclear submarine, The U.S.S. Kamehameha as a nuclear power instructor/ engineering officer of the watch for reactors. George graduated from the University of Hawaii in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He was a member of the Literacy Council and served as a literacy counselor; mentor for Buncombe County inmates; Special Olympics Volunteer, and was an active leader for Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. George was an avid reader, amateur artist and writer, and loved to hike and fish. He was employed at AVL Technologies.

Surviving George is his wife of 32 years, Debra Smith Salazar; sons, Greg Adam Salazar and wife, Christie, of High Wycombe, England, Peter Robert Salazar of Asheville, NC; mother-in-law, Ruthie Smith, St. Johnsbury, VT; brother-in-law, Bubba Smith and wife, Anne, St. Johnsbury, VT; sister-in-law, Donna Matte and husband, Andy, St. Johnsbury, VT; brother-in-law, Rick Smith and wife, Debbie, St. Johnsbury, VT; sister-in-law, Denice Smith, Buxton, Maine; sister-in-law, Diane Cole and husband, Steve, Beech Island, SC; brother-in-law, Ron Smith and wife, Christina, North Yarmouth, Maine; and granddaughter, Catherine-Claire Annabelle Salazar; and several nieces and nephews. The family would also like to mention George's half-sister, Gloria and son, Jason.

George was a man who was well loved by family and friends and will be deeply missed. He had a deep passion for life and people, and was a blessing to both his family and all he enjoyed. The family thanks everyone for all of their prayers, condolences, texts, emails, and kind words on the passing of this wonderful and unique man.

Tentative memorial celebration of George's life will be held June 22, 2013 So that a memorable celebration of George's life can be meaningfully prepared and family and friends from up north who have to travel can safely attend. George's wishes were to have everyone whom he had given a painting to bring that painting to the memorial celebration and share the story behind the painting.
