Charlotte - Charles Edward Zeigler, Sr., passed away on July 9, 2013 at his Southminster home in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was born September 28, 1925 in Bogota, New Jersey to Charles B. Zeigler and Nora E. Zeigler. He was previously deceased by his parents; his sister, Charleen Z. Kissinger; his brother, Branson E. Zeigler; and his sister, Jean Zeigler; and is survived by his sisters, Phyllis Z. Sudduth and Annabelle Z. Royster.

Mr. Zeigler is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Virginia "Ginni" H. Zeigler; three children, Charles E. Zeigler, Jr. and his wife, Anita P. Zeigler, Virginia Jeanne Zeigler, and Nancy Z. Ruane and her husband, James L. Ruane III; six grandchildren, Austin B. Zeigler (Elizabeth), James L. Ruane IV, Virginia Isabelle Ruane, Braden D. Hamilton (Alfred), Richard B. Davis, Jr. and Kensley D. Nelson (Luke); and four great-grandchildren, Tobin P. Zeigler, Davis A. Hamilton, Fenley L. Hamilton and William P. Nelson.

Mr. Zeigler was Chairman, President and CEO of PSNC Energy, formerly known as Public Service Company of North Carolina Inc., a natural gas public utility company where he contributed 46 years of service. He also served as chairman of the Southern Gas Association, president of the Southeastern Gas Association, chairman of Associated Gas Distributors, and served on the board of the American Gas Association, from which he received the Hall of Flame Award.

Mr. Zeigler graduated from Charlotte Central High School and attended NC State University, then honorably served his country during World War II and the Korean War, retiring from the US Air Force Reserve as a Major.

Among other notable accomplishments and civic service, Mr. Zeigler was elected a member of the North Carolina Business Hall of Fame, served as president of the board for The Salvation Army of Gastonia, served on the national advisory board of The Salvation Army, served on the board of the North Carolina Chamber of Commerce (NCCBI), served as chairman of the advisory board for the Duke University Eye Center, served as president of the Gastonia Chamber of Commerce, served as president of the Gaston County Community Foundation, from which he received the Allen Sims award, served as president of the Noon Optimist Club, served as president of the Gaston County YMCA, served as chairman of the Gaston County United Way, served as chairman of the board of advisors for Belmont Abbey College and as a member of its board of trustees, served on the board of advisors for UNC-Charlotte, served on the board of trustees for Gaston College, served on the board of advisors for Johnson C. Smith University, was a member of the NC State University Foundation, served as an elder and as a deacon for the First Presbyterian Church of Gastonia, was named a Paul Harris Fellow - Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, was named Man of the Year by the Gastonia Gazette in 1996 and received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Belmont Abbey College.

Mr. Zeigler was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was known by his friends and many others whose lives he touched as a gracious, charitable gentleman.

Mr. Zeigler will be greatly missed by his family, who wish to thank Nancy Schroemer and also the staff at both Southminster and Hospice, who very capably cared for Mr. Zeigler, providing him with comfort and dignity during the last months of his life.

McLean Funeral Home on New Hope Road in Gastonia, North Carolina will be providing care for Mr. Zeigler's family. A private family committal will be held at the mausoleum of Gaston Memorial Park on New Hope Road. A memorial service to celebrate Mr. Zeigler's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 13th, at the First Presbyterian Church on Garrison Boulevard in Gastonia with Rev. Dr. John L. Frye, Jr. and Rev. Lauren Sease Vanacore officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be former board members of Public Service Company of NC Inc. Mr. Zeigler's family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following his memorial service.
