John D. "Mouse" Medford

Clyde - John David Medford, age 75, passed away on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at his residence after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.

Born in a two-story framed home on the banks of the Pigeon River near Hyder Mountain outside of Clyde. He was the son of the late Amos and Ruth Trantham Medford and was also preceded in death by his first wife of 42 years, Joan Bradley Medford in 2002 and one brother, Joseph Howell Medford. John was a 1955 graduate of Clyde High School, attended Western Carolina University, transferred to North Carolina State University where he graduated with a degree in textile technology in 1959. Upon graduation, he worked for Burlington Industries in Raeford, North Carolina while the first of his two sons were born. John then moved back to Clyde in 1965 working for Sayles Biltmore Bleachery. In 1967, he went to Akzona where he was Marketing/Technical Manager and helped develop the waterproof breathable membrane, the forerunner to Gortex. He served as Vice president of Sales and Marketing for North American Rayon and president and CEO of Narcote. John helped develop many innovative fabric products with his fantastic technical mind. He was also a little league coach and was heavily involved in the Clyde Youth Program through the 70's. John was a member of Clyde Central United Methodist Church and attended Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a prolific buck dancer and had danced on the Grand Ole' Opry stage with the Echo Inn and Carolina Cloggers. John was also an avid swimmer and loved traveling all over the United States and worldwide.

He is survived by three sons, Mitchell Eric and his wife, Elizabeth Hubbell Medford of Austin, Texas, Norman Amos and Mary Burnette Medford, of Canton, North Carolina, and Vincent David and his wife, Kandace Banks Medford, of the Bethel Community; two grandchildren, Amy Danielle and Austin Bradley Medford; his wife of more than nine years, Marcia Moore Medford; two stepdaughters, Allison Catherine Anderson of Johnson City, Tennessee and Audra Nicole Sheppard of Kihei, Hawaii; and two step-grandchildren, Jason Michael and Morgan Katherine Anderson.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 24, 2012 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Doug Love officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service at the funeral home.
