LEE JAMES
PEACOCK, III
MAY 25, 1928 - JAN. 5, 2013 - ATHENS, GA - Lee Peacock of Athens, Georgia, passed away at his home after a lengthy illness. He was a native of Brevard, NC. He earned the AB degree in psychology at Berea College in 1950 and the M.S. (1952) and Ph.D. degree (1956) in psychology, minoring in neurophysiology, at the University of Kentucky. From 1954-1956, he was a psychophysiologist at the U. S. Army Laboratory at Fort Knox Kentucky. From December 1956 to September 1959 he was first a Research Associate then Acting Director of the Yerkes Laboratories of Primate Biology in Orange Park, Florida.
In 1959, Lee joined the faculty at the University of Georgia where he would spend the next 31 years before retiring in 1990 as Professor Emeritus. Representing Psychology, he was instrumental in UGA receiving a $5 million dollar grant in 1969 to develop Biological Sciences at UGA. He was prime mover in the establishment within the Department of Psychology of the Biopsychology Doctoral Program, subsequently renamed the Neuroscience and Behavior Program and continuing today as part of the Behavioral and Brain Sciences Program.
Lee had 43 scientific publications including one textbook, and he gave 91 scholarly presentations, many invited, before regional, national, and international scholarly societies. He served as President of the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology in 1974, and he was a Fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Lee's Other memberships included the American Psychological Association, Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, Society for Neuroscience, Society for Psychophysiological Research, and the Psychonomic Society. He was listed in American Men of Science, World Who's Who in Science, and in 10 additional such honorary listings.
Lee is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marian; his daughter, Lynn and her husband, Joe Bray; his daughter, Janice, his son, Tim and his wife, Kathy; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of the Bernstein Funeral Home and Cremation Service which is in charge of arrangements. The family asks that those so inclined may donate in Lee's memory to the Psychology Development Fund at the University of Georgia or to Compassionate Care Hospice.
