Barnardsville - Billy Bucker, age 93 of Buckner Branch Road died Sunday, August 24, 2014. Mr. Buckner was born October 17, 1920 in Democrat, NC to the late Charlie and Myrtle Morgan Buckner. He was a resident of Buncombe County for most of his life and was the youngest of four sons. Mr. Buckner was a U.S. Army Veteran, and enlisted for a second time in the U.S. Marine Corp following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served in the Pacific aboard the USS Essex Aircraft Carrier as a 40 mm anti-aircraft gunner. He married Glyndon Wallin in 1947 who died in 2008. Mr. Buckner was a cattle and tobacco farmer, a former automobile salesman and retired from NCDOT as a right of way agent.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Buckner was preceded in death by brothers; J.B. Buckner, who died in France during World War II in 1944, Charles Buckner and Roy Buckner.

Surviving are his daughter; Pat Burchfiel and husband Tom of Barnardsville, son; Mike Buckner and wife Jane of Barnardsville, two grandchildren; Melody Buckner, and Wayne Buckner and wife Sheena, three great grandchildren; five step grandchildren and one step great granddaughter.

His funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, August 27, 2014, in Ivy Hill Baptist Church where he was a member. Reverend Worth Emory will officiate; burial will be in Antioch Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post No. 5483 Mars Hill Memorial Team.

The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville.

At other times, the family will be at the home of Mike and Jane Buckner, 175 Buckner Branch Rd., Barnardsville, NC 28709.
