C. Buckner Obituary

C. A. "Doc"

Buckner

Marion - On a beautiful Saturday morning, Doc Buckner made his long awaited journey home. He died very peacefully at home on September 7th, with his daughters and friends by his side.

Born Claude Alvin Buckner on May 9, 1927 to Baxter and Bertha Ballenger Buckner, he had lived in Marion, NC for fifty seven years, where he and his beloved wife Mary Catherine, raised their family. Mary Catherine Sebastian Buckner preceded him in death, and he is survived by his three daughters, Amy Buckner of the home, Debbie Groover and her husband Gino Pride of Marion, and Linda Johnson and her husband Chuck of Fairfield, California. He is also survived by his brother Lloyd Buckner and his wife Betty of Etowah, and his sister Edith Gill of Tryon; his sister Eula Fran Neely preceded him in death.

Doc grew up in Fletcher and Arden, NC and graduated from Valley Springs High School. He served in the US Navy from 1945 to 1947 as a BM-3C. In 1951 he received his BS degree in Agricultural Education and began working with the Soil and Water Conservation Service as a District Conservationist. He worked in the Agricultural Chemicals industry from 1957 until his retirement in 1991.

For fifty years Doc worked as McDowell County District Supervisor. He served for many years as the Chairman of the Finance Committee for the NC Association of District Supervisors. In 2008 he was recognized with the most prestigious award given a District Supervisor when he was inducted into the SWCD Hall of Fame.

Doc loved the Lord, and served as a Baptist Deacon for over 40 years and taught Sunday School for 35 years. He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church.

He was also a Mason and a Shriner, and was a patient coordinator for the Shriner Hospital in Greenville, NC. He was a member of the Lion's Club for 43 years.

The family would like to express their immense gratitude to everyone at McDowell Hospice, for the loving care that they have provided for Doc for the last year and half. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Hospice of McDowell County, 575 Airport Road, Marion, NC 28752.

A funeral service will be Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church in Marion with Dr. Tom Walker and Dr. Curtis Barbery officiating. Interment will follow at McDowell Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Westmoreland Funeral Home.
