I only learned of Don's passing today, March 28. Maybe I'm wrong but it seems Don Robertson was on the air at WHHT in Durham (now off the air) in the late 1940's. I was an intern at another Durham station at the time and, although I never met Don, I remember that smooth, resonant, voice and realized he had a great broadcast talent. I definitely remember him as "the Voice of CBS Sports." I would like to hear from a family member who could confirm whether he ever worked in Durham as I believe. I can be reached at [email protected].

Don and I were very close friends at Asheville High school and later at Carolina. We competed in everything and I must admit, he beat me in everything from grades to tennis and everything else. We also sang in the same pick-up barbershop quartet. I used to call him "Uncle Hugh". I wonder if anyone remembers that radio show. We lost track of each other after college. I went on to the University of PA School of Dentistry and even practiced in Asheville for 10 years. I moved to Florida in 1965 (after getting my masters in pediatric dentistry at Carolina). We met again briefly at our 50th high school reunion in Asheville in 1995. Mary was with him then. He was in Charlotte or New York then and working for CBS, I believe.
I used to kid him about my being his boss because I was 5 months older. He and Jake Jolliff were the youngest in our class and I was also among the youngest and I couldn't figure out how he managed to get in our class. He showed everyone over and over how well suited he was to be there, (see the 1945 Hillbilly). I communicated twice with him at Anne's Choice at Warminster but I knew something was wrong when I couldn't reach him for the last two years.
He was a great friend and a great loss to his many descendants. I am very saddened to end this era of my life but rest assured, I shall meet him again in a wonderful place where we can again pick up our great relationship. Maybe I will be able to win a set or two then.
I would be glad to talk or communicate with any of his children or grand children. My number is (352) 375-7181. Please identify yourself quickly because I get hundreds of fraudulent calls.

Don Robertson's voice was one of the first television voices I recall hearing as a boy (don't know whether it was on The NFL Today or The Prudential College Football Report; one of those two things for CBS Sports); I didn't know anything about the voice I heard until much later in my life, when I found out that it was Don Robertson who was the name of that announcer. Ever since then (I'm autistic), I have enjoyed having the chance to relive Don's voice on YouTube and through other means on his various outings for CBS Sports (the aforementioned, and a few more), and a couple instances of his general CBS work (IDs and promos), and over that time, I have deemed Don Robertson to be one of the finest voices that television has ever had.
