Evelyn Carter

Asheville - Evelyn Carter, 81, died peacefully at home on May 18, 2017. Evelyn (nee Farley) was formerly from Linesville, PA and was graduated from Allegheny College. She taught art for many years before moving to Highlands, NC in 1979 where she worked at The Mountain Retreat and Learning Center directing the arts and crafts program.

In 1985 she relocated to Asheville where she worked part-time at the UU Congregation of Asheville and later served as the Director of Religious Education for the Tennessee Valley UU Church in Knoxville.

Evelyn retired to Asheville and was very active in the founding of the UU Congregation of the Swannanoa Valley where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and put her hand to many other activities.

Evelyn loved children, art, gardening, sewing, and singing. She enjoyed time with her friends, reading and going to movies. She especially loved spending time with her granddaughters, and also volunteered to read at a local preschool for many years.

She is survived by daughters Amy Brooks (Chris Paradise) and Pam Clarkson (Tadd), step-daughter Meagan Henry (James), 3 granddaughters Hannah, Evelyn, and Starling, and sisters Laura Stremanos (Jim) of Worthington, OH and Alice Beavers (Hal) of Waterford, PA.

Services will be held at the UU Congregation of Asheville on Friday, June 2 at 3:00pm and the family will receive visitors from 1:45-2:45. Gifts in her memory may be made to The Mountain, UUCSV, and Hospice of Asheville.
