Manuel "Manny/Chico/Pancho" Federico Alonso

Punta Gorda, FL - Manuel "Manny/Chico/Pancho" Federico Alonso of Punta Gorda, Florida, passed away Friday September 18, 2015 at his home.

A memorial service with militarily honors followed by a brief reception will be held at 2 PM Saturday the 26th at Kays- Ponger & Uselton Funeral Home at 635 E .Marion Ave, Punta Gorda, FL 33950 (T: 941-639-1133).

Manny was born September 21, 1940 in Asheville, NC to Manuel Federico Alonso and Sylvia Case. He attended Asheville High School and under the GI Bill he graduated from the University of North Carolina, Asheville, with a Bachelors of Science in Physics. After honoring his country by serving in the Air Force, he married Kena Avendano in Asheville, NC on April 30, 1966.

During his entire career, Manny worked as a highly successful network engineer for GTE/Verizon Telecommunication. He gained increasing positions of responsibility in the USA as well as in Caracas, Venezuala and Mexico City, Mexico. He retired at 59 and moved together with Kena to Punta Gorda, FL.

Manny was a loving father and husband, and the best grandfather his two grandsons could wish for. He was always ready to help anyone with any need or project, and his friendship, magnetic personality, genuine character and infectious smile were appreciated by all.

He loved going out on his boat, listening to country music and fishing on the Peace River. He used to sit back in his captain's chair, smile and say: "Today, I might even bait my hook." An accomplished golfer, Manny was the most relaxed person that ever played 18 holes! He enjoyed talking and joking with neighbors, and liked to put a smile on the face of anyone he came in contact with. Manny also enjoyed time to himself; you would often find him working diligently on many intricate projects in his immaculately kept garage/work bench.

Manny is survived by his loving family: wife, Kena of 49 years; his son, Chris Alonso of Miami, FL; his daughter, Brenna Johnson; and two grandsons, Cade and Keean Johnson of Sherman Oaks, CA; and his brother, Robert Greenwald of Venice, FL.
