Pierce Thomas Cole Obituary
Pierce Thomas Cole

Whittier, CA - Pierce Thomas Cole of Whittier, California, age 93, died peacefully on Monday, July 8 with his loving wife, Alice; three daughters; and three of his grandchildren by his side singing, telling stories, and sharing their love for him.

He was born at home December 26, 1919 in the Newfound Community of Leicester to the late James Johnson Cole and Eudora Ella Cole, the youngest of nine children, and was the last surviving member. The Coles are one of the original farming families of Leicester.

After graduating Leicester High School in 1936, Pierce attended Brevard College for his two-year business degree. Along with this, he excelled at music and enjoyed participating in the college choir.

Following graduation from Brevard College, Pierce moved to Asheville to work and establish himself, where he met his wife, Alice Louise Ledbetter. They were married on November 9, 1941 and remained so for 71 years.

Pierce volunteered for the Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed around the U.S. as a radio instructor to Air Corps pilots, while Alice did secretarial work on base.

After the war, Pierce and Alice moved to Los Angeles since jobs were scarce in North Carolina. He found work as a salesman with Moore Business Forms and remained with Moore his entire work career of more than thirty years, retiring as a District Manager. Pierce was also active in the Lion's Club for the duration of his career where he and Alice made friendships that lasted many years.

Pierce lived in the Whittier area for nearly sixty years raising his family and enjoying his later years, but always thought of himself as a country boy from North Carolina and was a true Southern gentleman. He loved to share old stories and songs, travel to North Carolina for family visits, and to Europe for cultural enrichment. However, family was always foremost for him.

Surviving Pierce are his wife Alice; daughters Carole Ann and husband James, Catherine Louise, and Connie Lynn and husband John; grandchildren Eudora and husband Matt, Saren, Alexis, Meghan, and John Pearce; and great-grandchildren Kelsan and Abrielle.

A memorial will be held at First United Methodist Church of Whittier, where he and Alice have been members for many years. He will be buried in the Cole family plot at Grace Methodist Church, Leicester, North Carolina. No dates have been set.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 876 Newfound Rd., Leicester, NC 28748.
