CULLOWHEE - Rev. Stanley Lee Bennett, Sr., a resident of 97 Well Springs Drive, died Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at the John H. Keever Solace Center in Asheville. He was born in York, S.C., August 27, 1924, a son of C.P. Bennett and Olive McDaniel Bennett and grew up in York in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. He served as a P-47 fighter pilot in WW II in the European Theatre. He graduated from Erskine College in 1948 with a BA in Pre- Med and graduated from Erskine Seminary in 1951. As a student he served in the Tirzah ARP Church and following graduation served as pastor of the Craig Avenue ARP Church in Charlotte. In 1954 he became a member of the Old Asheville Presbytery serving the Montreat Presbyterian Church. From 1959 to 1964 he served as an aviation missionary in Brazil. He then organized the Cullowhee Presbyterian Church and served as campus minister for Western Carolina University. During this time he served on the board of trustees of the C.J. Harris Hospital in Sylva, N.C. In 1978 he became Associate Pastor of Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles, Calif. In Los Angeles he was on the advisory board of the Union Rescue Mission and also studied at the American Institute of Family Relations. In 1988 he returned to North Carolina where he became pastor of Grassy Creek Presbyterian Church in Spruce Pine and the Newdale Presbyterian Church in Burnsville until his retirement in 1991. He continued to be active in the Presbytery, serving on committees and commissions. He also served as an interim pastor of Riceville Presbyterian Church in Asheville and stated supply of Pineola Presbyterian Church in Newland. He also served on the board of directors for Habitat for Humanity in Mitchell County, and was a member of the board of directors of Shepherd's Staff of Spruce Pine, a united church service to the needy. On May 22, 1954 he was married to Miss Jo Ella Dunaway who survives of the home. Also surviving are three sons, Stanley Lee Bennett, Jr. and his wife, Kay, of Thomasville, Rev. Joseph Dunaway Bennett and his wife, Christy, of Asheville, and John Maxwell Bennett and his wife, Sheila, of Cullowhee; a sister, Bonnie Marie Lynch and her husband, Graham, of Winston Salem; two brothers, William Bennett and his wife, Barbara, of Rock Hill, S.C. and Douglas Bennett and his wife, Jane, of Swansea, S.C. Also surviving are five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Mark Bennett; by a sister, Vera Poteat; and by brothers, Oren Bennett, Joseph Bennett, and Charles Bennett. A private family graveside service was held on Thursday, November 1, 2012 at Rose Hill Cemetery in York, S.C. by the Rev. Joseph Bennett. A celebration of life service will be held Friday, November 9, 2012 at 4 PM at Cullowhee Presbyterian Church (USA) by the Rev. George Weekley, retired Methodist minister, by the Rev. Joe David Fore, retired Baptist minister, and by the Rev. Margie Boyd, pastor of Cullowhee Presbyterian Church. The family will greet friends following the service.
