Stephen W. Stoneberg Obituary
Stephen W. Stoneberg

Asheville - Stephen W. Stoneberg, 68 passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 in Asheville, NC. Steve was born on November 7, 1949 on a farm in Maxwell, Iowa to William and Persis Stoneberg. He went on to attend Iowa State University where he graduated in 1973 with a degree in Art and Design. He later attended the Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, CA to pursue his love of photography. He worked as a miner in Arizona and Colorado and later started his own Architectural Photography business. Steve moved to Winona, Minnesota in 1994 where he lived and worked as a carpenter until 2006. From Winona he moved to Asheville, North Carolina. Steve was an avid artist who especially loved photography, wood working, and carpentry. He spent his time practicing, honing, and studying his art until he perfected it. He belonged to several area photography and woodturning organizations and attended every conference he could get to. Untraditional and unapologetic in his ways, Steve was a free spirit who paved his own path. Steve will be remembered for his love of nature and the outdoors, horror movies, popcorn, telling jokes (not always good ones), and creating things for the people he loved. Steve's three grandchildren were a major source of light in his life; together they created traditions that will be treasured forever. His grandson's favorites were attending the local fair, fishing on the lake, and going out for root beer floats and black cows. Steve always had an interactive project for the three of them to work on together. The boys looked forward to his visits with great excitement. Steve always went home with a camera full of photos from their various sporting events that he would meticulously edit and send back. The birth of his granddaughter, Evie brought him so much joy. He was eager to get to know her, watch her grow, and be a part of her life. Steve leaves behind two daughters, Emma Stoneberg and Amanda (Mike) Slaggie; three adoring grandchildren, Alex, Jack, and Evie Slaggie; three brothers, Ted (Teresa) Stoneberg, Bill (Frank Mountjoy) Stoneberg, Don (Marsha) Stoneberg; two nieces, Tami (Mike) Hohmann, Jill (Pedro Garcia) Stoneberg; three nephews, Bill Stoneberg, Joe (Lynn) Stoneberg, and Todd Stoneberg; four great nieces, three great nephews, as well as his former wife, Elizabeth Stoneberg. He is preceded in death by his parents. There will be a celebration of life gathering on Sunday, August 26th in the afternoon at the residence of Mike and Amanda Slaggie. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Mission Hospital and Care Partners Hospice for their excellent care and compassion.
