Canton - Charles Delain Chambers, age 80, passed away on Monday, May 12, 2014 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home.

A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Baxter Charles and Vella Whiteside Chambers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a baby daughter, Elizabeth, and a brother, Reverend John Chambers. At the age of six, Charles moved to Swain County and graduated from Swain County High School where he played football and earned All-Scholastic Honors. He attended North Carolina State University from 1953 until 1957 and graduated with a degree in Agriculture. Charles was drafted into the United States Army twice serving as a medic, 1957 until 1959 and 1961 until 1962. He served as an officer for four years with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. In 1968, he then transferred to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation until his retirement in 1989. He served with the NC SBI as the District Special Agent In Charge for the Asheville District, Charlotte District, Hickory District, and was the director of security at Biltmore Estate two years after retirement. Charles volunteered with Haywood Christian Ministries for 20 years and with Hospitality Houses for Carolinas Medical Center and Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Clark Chambers; one daughter, Rachel Seeley, of Waynesville; a grandson, William Gregory Proctor of Waynesville; and one granddaughter, Katherine Victoria Proctor of Waynesville.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 15, 2014 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Don Allen officiating and grandson, Will Proctor delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow at Holly Springs Church in Bryson City. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening.
