Black Mountain - Thomas Patrick Killough of Black Mountain, NC, 78, died peacefully at home on May 14, 2014.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary Klein Killough, son Atticus (Kristie) and grandsons Gavin, Aidan, Brendan, Ryan, Ian and Damian of Greenville, SC and son Jason (Linda) and granddaughters Maria and Monica of Dallas, Texas.

Patrick was born in Jackson, MS in 1935, graduated from St. John's Jesuit High School in Shreveport, LA., received a MA degree from Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL, studied in Vienna as a Fulbright scholar and Japan, and did doctoral work in philosophy at the University of Texas, Austin, where he met his future wife Mary.

He joined the US Foreign Service in 1964 and served in Hong Kong, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Pakistan, Iraq, Germany and Suriname and had domestic assignments in Washington, Detroit, and Norman, OK, as Diplomat in Residence.

Patrick and Mary retired to Swannanoa, NC in 1990. He taught political science as an adjunct professor at local colleges. An ardent Rotarian, he co-founded the first Rotary club in Afghanistan and later one in Canyon Lake, Texas. He was in Rotary clubs in Vietnam, Pakistan, Germany, Suriname, Washington, Detroit and Norman, OK. While in the West Asheville Rotary Club, he helped start the local Rotary High school Youth Exchange. He was a member of the Black Mountain Rotary Club for many years.

Patrick and Mary moved to Highland Farms Retirement Community in Black Mountain in 1994. Patrick was a founding member of the McCall Adult Education program, was co-founder of the Cross and Shamrock Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and founded the Asheville-Blue Ridge Torch Club in 2004.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 21, 2014 from 6-8pm at Harwood Home for Funerals, 208 W. State St., Black Mountain, NC.

A funeral mass will be held Thursday, May 22, 2014 at 10:30am at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Swannanoa, 102 Andrew Place, Swannanoa, NC. Burial will be in Edna, Texas.

Should anyone wish to make a memorial donation for Patrick, please consider the St. Vincent DePaul Society, c/o St. Margaret Mary Church or the Mission Hospital Cancer Center, 21 Hospital Drive, Asheville, NC 28801.

Our family wishes to thank the nurses and staff on the 3rd floor of the Mission Cancer Center and our Care Partners nurses Denise and Michelle for their gentle care. Finally we thank the entire Highland Farms Community, who have been a continuing support.
