Mary Slesinski Obituary
Born in Poland, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Agnes Butasek Timek. She moved to Laflin at an early age. She was a graduate of West Pittston High School.
Mary was a life resident of Laflin and was known as the first lady of Laflin. She was the first woman to serve as mayor of Laflin, the first woman justice of the peace and served as Laflin borough secretary, councilwoman and also served on the Board of Elections. Mary started the Laflin Playground, which is named after her, and started the Boy Scouts in Laflin. She was a patron and was instrumental in the building of the Laflin Library, Laflin Borough Building and St. Maria Goretti Church. She received the St. Ann's Award. Mary had been writing the History of Laflin.
She was a co-founder of SVS Associates, Wilkes-Barre. She was a member of St. Maria Goretti Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley, on Jan. 18, 2007. She was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Lorianne; son-in-law, Terry Schatzel; daughter-in-law, Suzanne Slesinski; sisters, Anna Simerson and Agnes Kolesar; and brother, Andrew Timek Jr.
She is survived by daughter, Mary Lucy Vosburg and her husband, Robert, Wapwallopen; son, Stanley Jr. and his wife, Judy, Syracuse, N.Y.; son, Michael, Pittston; daughter, Ann Therese Schatzel, Bear Creek Township; grandchildren, Carolyn Slesinski, Rebecca Slesinski, Matthew Slesinski, Marianne Montagna and T.J. Schatzel; great-grandchildren, Cory, Caitlyn, Ava, Christopher, Max and Poviel; sisters, Angela Yozwiak, Avoca; and Irene Zigmund, Inkerman; brother, Edward Timek and his wife, Arlene, Inkerman; sister-in-law, Rose Timek, Dallas; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday from Michael J. Mikelski Funeral Home, 293 S. River St., Plains Township.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. at St. Maria Goretti Church, 42 Redwood Drive, Laflin, with Monsignor Neil Van Loon officiating.
Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Exeter.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
The Bereavement Group will recite the rosary at the chuch at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Memorial donations may be made in Mary's name to the Laflin Library, 42 Laflin Road, Laflin, PA 18702.

I was fortunate enough to spend a considerable amount of time with this wonderful human being and I do not think I can express in words the level of respect and admiration I have for her. Until the end, Mary lived life to the fullest and brightened the day of every one she came across. She will be forever missed.

I would not be where I am today without Mary. She helped me while I worked on my Eagle Scout and when I became a police officer in Laflin in 1986. She was a great woman and will be missed.
