Michael J. Simko Obituary

Michael J. Simko, 71, of Swoyersville, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Nov. 22, 2020, in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born July 23, 1949, he was the son of Jennie Simko. Mike was a graduate of Swoyersville High School (Wyoming Valley West) where he played basketball, and King's College, where he earned his degree in education. He served as borough coordinator for Swoyersville in the years following the Agnes Flood of '72, helping to rebuild the community. Mike went on to work as a salesman for Pensee Medical, Penox Technologies, and Diversified Business Forms, where he developed lasting relationships with his customers. He was also a proud part owner of The Stadium Club in Swoyersville, currently Murphy's Pub. Prior to his retirement, he worked briefly for the Luzerne County Zoning Office.

Mike was a past member of the Italian Riunita Society, Swoyersville American Legion Post 644, Swoyersville, Lions Club, Wilkes-Barre Postal Service Bowling League, and the Luzerne County Democratic Party. He enjoyed coaching his sons and mentoring others in the Swoyersville Little League and Fort-Swoyer Teener Leagues.

Mike also served as a past president of the Wyoming Valley West Gridiron Club, and was most notably a diehard Boston Red Sox fan.

Mike enjoyed nothing more than spending time with friends and family. His children were the light of his life. He was all of theirs as well as many of their friends' first coach. Mike never let a moment pass by where he didn't say how proud he was of his boys or how much he loved them. He enjoyed countless summers with his family in Ocean City, Md., his favorite vacation spot. His favorite day of the year was Father's Day, which he said he celebrated year-round. Mike enjoyed the simplicity of a beautiful sunny day and always had a smile on his face. To know him was to love him and life will certainly never be the same without him.

Mike was preceded in death by his son, Christian.

Surviving is the love of his life of 49 years, Anita Simko; mother, Jennie Simko; sons, Corey (Kate); grandchildren, Jack and Lillie, Scott and Mike Simko, brothers, Frank (Leslie); and Joseph (Sheila); sister, Janet Chipego (Robert); nieces, Carrie Singer, Kim Calvey, Lori Chipego and Lauren Sclafani; nephew, Bob Chipego.

Due to COVID concerns, there will be a private family service. A celebration of Mike's life will be held sometime next year when we can all gather safely and honor the legacy of a wonderful man. Dedicate gifts to the family by donating to The Simko Love Foundation, in remembrance of Michael J. Simko, at www.simkolove.com.

All donations will support the foundation's community work serving academic and athletic youth communities.
