Theodore Armillay Obituary

Theodore (Ted) Armillay, 65, of Pittston passed away Friday evening, Jan 11, 2013, at home surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Dr. Joy Angelella Armillay. Wed Aug. 16, 1975, the couple was married for 37 years.

Born July 11, 1947, son of the late Fulvio James and Elizabeth Holland Armillay, Ted was a 1965 graduate of Old Forge High School, where he excelled in football and baseball before earning his bachelor's degree in education from East Stroudsburg University. Prior to his retirement, he served as a beloved educator within the Old Forge School District for more than 35 years and remained a member of the Old Forge Retired Teachers.

An avid sports fan, he excelled in tennis and had a love for golf while rooting for the Penn State Nittany Lions, Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles. A superb cook who also enjoyed photography, he was a model railroad train enthusiast. His world was his family. A kind-hearted and generous man who would make a friend with whoever he met, he'll be forever missed by those who love him.

Of Roman Catholic faith, he was a member of St. Maria Goretti Church in Laflin.

He is also survived by his children, son, Michael Armillay and wife, Reena Gambhir; Washington, D.C.; and daughter, Megan Armillay and fiance, A.J. Calabrese, West Chester; his siblings, three brothers, Steve Armillay, Taylor; John Armillay and wife, Donna, Old Forge; and James Armillay and wife, Marygrace, Taylor; his mother-in-law, Magdalene Angelella, Pittston; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, extended family; and his dog and sidekick, Stella.

He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law, Philip Angelella.

His family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to both Ted's caregiver, Nataliya Volynets, and to the staff of Erwine Home Health and Hospice for all the love and care given to Ted throughout his illness.

Blessing services are scheduled at 4 p.m. Monday at St. Maria Goretti Church, 42 Redwood Drive, Laflin, to be concelebrated by Monsignor Neil VanLoon, pastor, and the Rev. James Paisley. Relatives and friends may pay their respects from 3 p.m. until services Monday at the church. Interment will be in Old Forge Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ted Armillay Charitable Foundation.

Arrangements are under the care of the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 517 N. Main St., Old Forge.

I echo the sentiments expressed earlier by Art Moretti. I too got up before dawn on school days in the late 1970's to play pickup basketball in the Old Forge High School Gym with the group organized by Mr. Armillay. I always loved sports, but never had a great love for basketball until I started playing with this group in junior high school. It grew to become my favorite sport and I still play today. I enjoyed the exercise and learning the game, but participation taught us more than basketball. It taught us commitment, sportsmanship, and social skills. I too greatly appreciate Mr. Armillay's dedication to students and will forever fondly remember those early morning games in the gym. RIP

To Joy, Steve, John, Jim and the entire Armillay family, I am deeply sorry for your loss. I was privileged to have been mentored by Ted in both the Old Forge youth sports programs and as a student at Old Forge High. I will will always treasure my time spent with the Old Forge football Bandits and Bankers in the early 70s. Ted, Steve and John dedicated many hours to our teams, ran a first class program and always treated us well. RIP Teddy, you have left a great legacy and you will be missed.

I remember a program Teddy ran at 6:00 am in the Old Forge gym during the late 1970s. I showed up everyday to play basketball with Teddy and other kids. Looking back it meant a lot to me and I realize how committed he was to kids and their development. He was a teacher in every sense of the word and I will remember those games forever and the impact he had on me. I'm sorry for your loss.
