John E. Mazur

John E. Mazur, 83, of Mount Laurel, N.J., formerly of Plymouth, passed into the hands of the Lord, Friday, Nov. 1, 2013.

Born June 17, 1930 in Plymouth, he was the son of the late Frank and Margaret (Koprowski) Mazur.

John was a graduate of Plymouth High School, Class of 1948, and a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Class of 1952, where he played and excelled as a quarterback in football and was a member of the 1949 National Championship team.

He had an extensive career as a football coach for Tulane University, Marquette University and Boston University. He moved on to the professional ranks as an offensive coach for the Buffalo Bills and the New England Patriots, then becoming the head coach of the Patriots. He completed his career as a defensive coach for the Philadelphia Eagles and the defensive coordinator for the New York Jets. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.

He was a United States Marine Corps officer, serving during the Korean War, and was a life member of the American Legion, Shawnee Post 463 of Plymouth. Also, he was a member of the Notre Dame Club of South Jersey.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Mazur.

Surviving are his loving wife of 55 years, the former, Bernadine Melovitz; daughter, Cynthia and her husband, John Bozewicz, Lumberton, N.J.; son, John E. Mazur and his wife, Debbie, Hainesport, N.J.; two grandsons, John and Scott Mazur; brothers, Thomas, California; Michael and his wife, Sally, Texas; and Edward, South Carolina.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the S.J. Grontkowski Funeral Home, 530 W. Main St., Plymouth, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. John the Baptist, Nesbit Street, Larksville. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum, Hanover Township.

Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.
