To Jonathan and the family, Deborah has been such an huge encouragement and inspiration to me as a musician down through the years. I can remember sharing so many blessed musical experiences with her in Topeka and throughout the state. What a void her passing leaves. I am a better musician and person today because of her influence and spirit. The works she has done speak for themselves. May God give you the grace and peace that only He can give during this time and in the days to come.

The news of my dear sister's passing was such a shock to me that it has taken me a week to even come to grips with it being true. Thank you Hicks family for your loving sense of family, for arms big enough to embrace everyone who needs an extended family. Debbie and I were not the kind of friends who had to talk to each other everyday or be over each other's house but we had a way of knowing when the other needed prayer or someone to talk to. I will truly miss my sister but I can rejoice in knowing that she is at peace in the presence of her Lord.

Jonathan and To the Entire Family of Deborah Hicks,
I must admit - I was so shocked to hear of the homegoing of Deborah!

Immediately when I heard the news, my mind raced back to the many years of knowing Deborah through the state camp - Camp Ascension, Kaw Valley District Youth Convention meetings that we attended when "we were both youth conventioners", and the Kansas State meetings we attended as delegates. There were just certain faces you looked for when you attended those meetings...and Deborah (and Jonathan) were among those happy faces to see and recognize and reunite with each time!

As we matured into adulthood, it was evident, Deborah had a very recognizeable presence whenever she entered the convention churches and church meetings. She always seemed to have a "distinct way" of doing what she did in church work - especially with the youth.

When the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. was hosted in Kansas City, Deborah, Jonathan and I were entrusted with the awesome opportunity and responsibility, of preparing more than 200 youth choir members from the states of Kansas & Missouri for the opening convention musical. Truly Deborah's commitment to serving her God was never compromised! From the very first rehearsal, she accepted the challenge of bringing melodious harmonies together with children from age 2-22. She easily could have taken advantage of the situation of 'high profile' and lifted herself up. But she maintained a consistency that exemplified the great work for the cause of Christ was the reason for this gathering. Not only did she accept the responsibility of giving leadership, but it was evident and she made sure that as many youth as possible from Topeka would be able to take part in this momentous occassion. She (and Jonathan) drove cars and vans of youth choir members and musicians...FAITHFULLY...from Topeka to the designated churches for weekly rehearsals in KCK & KCMO for several months of preparation. And after each rehearsal of two hours (and some nights longer), they would get back in their vehicles, and return back to Topeka the same evening. Many of the youth workers in Kansas City marvelled, that's called "TRUE COMMITMENT TO THE CAUSE!"

What a wonderful woman of God we have had the honor to know and been blessed to love!

To All the Family - May you first be ENCOURAGED to feel the presence of our loving Christ during these days as you continue on the path of life.

May you be STRENGTHENED to know that the work of our Christ was brightly illuminated and imparted into the lives of MANY in Topeka, and across the nation through the work of Deborah.

May you always know the PEACE of the Father which passes all understanding, as you reflect on the joyous days of Deborah's work as she toiled diligently in the fields of Christian service.

To the Hicks family-
I was shocked and greaved to hear of the passing of Debbie. Since I left Topeka after high school graduation, I have not had the opportunity to directly interact with Debbie. She was younger than I, but I do remember we kids playing with her in my youth. She is in a better place, and my mother, my siblings and I all hope to see her again in that place - heaven.

For Sister Hicks, Jonathan, and all the members of the Hicks family. the words don't come easy for me. The best years of my gospel music career were spent playing the organ with Deborah on the piano. Not everbody can play gospel right but she played it just right. We made a great combo. Furthermore, she was a close friend and a wonderful sister in the LORD. Deborah was called to the work. She served and she is counted. I, along with the members of the Bethesda Community sit together with you in this hour.

To the family of Debbie Hicks-

Debbie and I graduated from THS together in 1969! She was always a friend to everyone, and almost everyone she met loved her. After graduation, we lost touch for a few years. Lo and behold, when I came to TWHS as a parent, here was Debbie with a warm smile and a great big hug to make me feel right at home- her kids were in school there too! It was fun seeing her at school events during those years our kids were in school at Topeka West. Over the last twenty years, we've run into each other several times each year and I have always enjoyed our chats about our kids! We always greeted each other with a big hug! Her beautiful smile and caring personality will be missed by all who knew and loved her! I was very shocked & saddened to see her obituary in the paper- I had no idea she had been sick! Please know that you and your family are all in my prayers! My prayers are with you all that the wonderful memories of Debbie will bring you peace! I was planning to attend the visitation tonight but I spent most of the day & evening at the hospital with an elderly friend and didn't get away in time! We will certainly all miss Debbie's radiant personality!

Mother Hicks, Johnathan, Jerlita, Edward and Erin, Our deepest sympathy goes out all of you. My heart hurts more that I am not able to be there to rejoice Debbie's homecoming with you. I know at a time like this you might not see it as a rejoicing time, But we all have sat and listen to plenty of God's men/women tell us that God does not give us nothing we can't bare and that God giveth and taketh, but not to hurt us but to make us strong. Your Mother, Sister and Daugther was a beautiful person and will always be remebered that way. She has left a good spirit with everyone she has touched and will not be forgotten. I am still amazed how she could directed Antioch's Mass Choir (when Pastor White was there) in those 10" high heels, do her holly dance and still bring the choir back in on time..When I get to Heaven she is going to show me how to do that. Love you all, and miss you. Stay strong for your beautiful love one.

I extend my most heartfelt condolences on the loss of Deborah. Johnathan--I just saw you a couple of weeks ago and you comforted me when I returned to Topeka because of the loss of my father. Your ministry in song touched me, and I told you that when I spoke with you. I offer these same words of comfort to you, although I can't sing them as eloquently as you did, "I can do ALL things, through Christ that strenghtens me"...those words helped me and I now extend them to you. Lean on him for strength in your time of sorrow. Deborah is singing in Heaven's choir, just as she did here on Earth!
