Donald Ebeling Obituary

A memorial service celebrating the life of Donald Lee Ebeling (Cueball) will be held at Warren-McElwain Mortuary Sunday Nov. 9th. The family will receive friends at 3p.m. with a service following at 4p.m. Don passed away at his home in Lawrence on Tuesday morning, Nov. 4, 2008. Don was born November 20, 1934 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the son of Willard and Zelma Ebeling. He graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1952 and married Jody Sparks in 1955. Moving to Lawrence in 1963, he owned and operated the Gaslight Tavern, and later opened The Carriage Lamp Restaurant. He subsequently worked in construction, eventually retiring from KU maintenance department. He is survived by Marlene (Novotny) Ebeling, who he married in 1980. His sister Marianne Zacour and her husband Zack and their children Lauren and Theron reside in Norway . He is also survived by nephews John Ebeling of Topeka, KS and Tom Ebeling of Richmond, VA. Don has three sons, Terry Ebeling, and his wife Kate Vercoe, Tim Ebeling, and his wife Josanye all of New Zealand, Billy Ebeling and his wife Andie Ahlstedt of Kansas City. Don's blended family includes John Novotny and his wife Susie of Lawrence, and Marge Epperson and her husband Eric of Eudora, KS. Don was well loved by 9 grandchildren: Cameron Vercoe Groenen, Cole, Landon and Cydney Ebeling all of New Zealand; Kelsey and Haley Epperson of Eudora, KS, John Novotny III, Sam and K.C. Claypool of Lawrence. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Harry Ebeling of Edmond, Oklahoma. A passionate golfer, Don was a marshal at Shawnee Lake golf course in Topeka. Don took delight in watching all of his grandchildren in their sporting events. The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society in care of the mortuary.
