Marion "Manning" Cooper, age 91, passed away June 30, 2012 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. Visitation is from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday, July 2, 2012 and 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at the funeral home with burial at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Mr. Cooper was born in Morton, MS on April 18, 1921 to the late Neva and Atley J. Cooper. He graduated from Morton High School and was a resident of Brandon for 34 years.

A veteran of the Army, he proudly served under General George Patton as a radio dispatcher with the 28th Infantry Division in Europe. He was awarded five major Battle Stars and one Bronze Star for meritorious service. He often spoke of his experiences in the Battle of the Bulge and attended reunions with fellow veterans.

After the war, he was employed with Morton Motor Company in sales. He owned and operated Service Chevrolet for 28 years. He sold the business, but continued to work for Ed Davis Chevrolet. He was Mayor of Pelahatchie for ten years. He also served as Mayor of Brandon for eight years until his retirement in 1989.

Manning was a member of Crossgates Baptist Church where he enjoyed the teaching and fellowship of his Sunday school class taught by Bob Maselle. Their constant prayers have been a comfort to him and his family.

He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Lamar Cooper and A. J. Cooper; his first wife, Grace Cooper; his son, Jon Cooper and his second wife, Ophelia Cooper.

He will be remembered by his stepchildren Nan Smith Sims and husband, Charlie of Marietta, GA; Sharon Smith Campbell and husband Tommy of Brandon, MS; James W. "Jim" Smith, Jr. and wife, Kerri of Ridgeland, MS; grandchildren, Scott Sims and Matt Sims of Marietta, GA; Chase Campbell and wife, Shey of Brandon, MS; Maggie Smith and James W. Smith, III of Ridgeland, MS.

Many thanks go to the staff at Hospice Ministries of Ridgeland, Sta-home Health and Hospice, and to his physician, Dr. Brad Madden. Thank you to B. J. Teague with Crossgates Baptist Church for constant support and prayers. We will always remember special attention received from the staff at Heritage House over the past 2 years.

Such a fine man, and a true Southern gentleman. He will be remembered for his goodness and kindness to others and the delight he brought into my aunt Ophelia's life. It was my pleasure to have known him. Rest in great peace, dear Manning.
