The Celebration of the life of Nannie Benson will be held at Cade Chapel M.B. Church, 1000 West Ridgeway Street, Jackson, MS, on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held at Collins Northside Chapel, located at 461 W. Northside Drive, from 12:00 noon on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 until 7:00 p.m. Collins Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements.
Mrs. Benson was a member of Cade Chapel M.B. Church and served in several ministries. She owned and operated M&N Beauty Salon located on Farish Street, during the sixties and seventies. Passionate about the fight for Freedom and Equality, Mrs. Benson participated in the March on Washington held in 1963. She went to jail several times as a result of her beliefs that restaurants and hotels should be enjoyed by all people, no matter the color of their skin. She also founded the Household Technicians, an organization of women, who worked as maids. As a result of her personal efforts, local support and national attention, women who worked in this area began to receive decent pay for an honest day's work.
Mrs. Benson was born on October 16, 1925 and departed this earthly life on October 3, 2012. She leaves to cherish her love and memory, her husband, George Benson, her brother, Robert Rucker and her sisters, Annie Rucker Wright and Rutha Mae Brown and a dear uncle, Columbus O'Banner, Sr. She also leaves grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

I was without words after hearing of the loss of Momma Benson last night. I was her neighbor and she was Momma Benson to us. She was indeed a Soldier, she set the path for many. I was inspired by her journey. She and Popa Benson have touched many. She will be missed!
