Dr. Fletcher L. Callahan


Fletcher Lee Callahan, 81, passed away after a brief illness March 7, 2013 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland with his wife by his side. Visitation will be from 5-8 PM Friday March 8th and funeral services Saturday March 9th, 2 PM at Lakewood Funeral Home in Clinton. Dr. Callahan was born September 21, 1931 in Aberdeen, MS and later moved to Columbus where he graduated from S.D. Lee High School. He joined the United States Air Force and served four years at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. He graduated Mississippi College in 1958 and continued his education at Loyola University School of Dentistry in New Orleans, LA. Dr. Callahan "Doc", remained in New Orleans where served as Professor of Operative Dentistry at Loyola School of Dentistry and as the Assistant Chairman of the General Dentistry Department at Louisiana State University School of Dentistry, in addition to a private practice. In 1973 he moved to Clinton where he continued to practice until his death. During his years in private practice he enjoyed mentoring several associates especially his sons Dr. Chris Callahan and Steve Callahan along with his current associate, Dr. Ryan Tracy. Doc was a 33rd Degree Mason, a member of First Baptist Church of Clinton and a life member of the American Dental Association and Mississippi Dental Association. Doc was preceded in death by his parents Mr. and Mrs. J.N. Layer of Columbus, MS and his daughter Kathryn C. Bonner of Naples, FL. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, his sons Dr. Chris Callahan of Marianna FL, Steve Callahan (Suzanne) of Naples, FL and Michael Childress (Kimberly) of Byram, MS along with 11 grandchildren: Lee Elmore, Christian Elmore, John Callahan, Hilary Childress, Rachel Callahan, Ian Childress, Aidan Callahan, Peyton Callahan, Rebekah Callahan, , Caleb Callahan and Abigail Callahan. He is also survived by his family at the dental clinic and many close friends.
