Stanley Black Obituary

Stanley Ross Black

Madison - A visitation will be held Monday August 27th at 11:00am followed by 2:00pm services at Madison United Methodist Church in Madison, MS.

A burial will immediately follow the service at Parkway Memorial Cemetery in Ridgeland, MS.

Mr. Black was born in Greenville, MS on November 12th, 1955, but spent the majority of his childhood in Columbus, MS, excelling in football, basketball, baseball and track. He went on to earn a football scholarship to Mississippi State University, where he was a two-time All-Southeastern Conference safety and a 1976 All-American. After a stellar college career, he was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the fourth round of the 1977 NFL Draft.

Mr. Black was a beloved husband to his wife, Nancy, and father to his three daughters, Parker, Taylor, and Ross. He loved hunting and fishing at Cowbell Farms, watching his girls play sports, and was an avid Mississippi State fan. He and Nancy founded Bulldog Construction, which they started together over twenty-five years ago working on numerous commercial construction projects throughout Mississippi.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Holt Black; three daughters, Parker Black Jackson (Trey) of Madison, MS, Margaret Taylor Black of New York, NY and Katherine Ross Black of Madison, MS; sister Barbara Black Travis (Nickey), brothers Harry Black (Melissa) and Paul Black (Ellen) and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be sent to the Stan Black #36 Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 2292, Mississippi State, MS, 39762. The family also requests honoring him by wearing his beloved maroon to the service.

So sorry to hear the tragic news. Stan and his family grew up in Columbus, MS around the corner from where I grew up and we attended the same high school. Have not seen him in many years, but just remember what a wonderful person he was in high school and always kept up w/him in his football career because everybody knew he would become a very special person no matter what his career path followed. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time and hope you know how many people you may not have ever met send their condolences. What a great man Stan was!

My prayers go out to your family. I didn't know Stan but my husband, Sammy Milner, died 4 years ago, also played football at MSU, was All American and 2 times SEC champion. I can imagine Stan and Sammy are both are sitting in heaven in the presence of Jesus Christ talking about old times at State because they had a lot in common. Both were great men and will be missed but we will see them again. I just wanted you to know that I share your pain and loss.

Nancy, Parker, Taylor and Ross, you are all in Bev and my prayers.
Words cannot begin to express our sorrow for your loss. Stan was more than a great person.
He was a man who carried a deep conviction of service before self.
Friends are a gift from God. They bring us joy and happiness, and help us in times of need. That is why I can genuinely say,"How glad I am I had Stan for a Friend."
Friendship does not end at death, it is eternal.
Again we offer our heartfelt sympathy and prayers to each of you.
May God wrap his arms around each of you.
Much Love in Christ,
Larry and Bev Henley

While questioning God and His plans is not what we are supposed to do, certain circumstances leave us asking "why"? One thing God will never ask us to do, is understand. I mean, how can we? His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts higher than ours. Faith in His goodness must be our foundation. Nancy, I am mourning your loss and grieving with your family today as Stan is laid to rest. It's been a good while since I last saw either of you, but I valued our friendship and always enjoyed our time together. May God give you strength today and the days to come. May He give you peace that passes all understanding.
